Update!

I went to check out 3 stores in Chinatown this weekend.

Ochi has two locations on Pender (between Main and Columbia) the two locations are across the street from each other. The newer Ochi has a bubble tea cafe in the front half of the store (so weird). Both have cheong sams, but in a few months, the plan is for the newer Ochi to carry all the bridal-related cheongsams and bridal gowns as well. The styles that they carry in the store are traditional. Prices off the rack range from about $70 to $130. They can custom make a cheong sam to your measurements which is an extra $30 on top of the price of the dress. They take your measurments and have the dress made in Beijing. It takes about two months. The service there was great and the materials of the dresses were nice (not too flimsy or cheesy)

Next I went to KK Boutique which is also on Pender. The store is small and packed full of dresses. The prices are about the same. The service was not as good, as there was only one person there in the whole store. They had traditional dresses to try on, but also mermaid, A-line, halter and strapless style cheong sams. I tried on all the non traditional ones and decided that I wanted a traditional cheong sam. Also, I did not like the fabric selection at KK as much (all the red fabrics were very very bright red - I was looking for something a little more subtle). They also make their gowns on site (not sent out to Beijing to have made)

The last store I visited was Rising Sun on Main Street. Very limited selection. Did not like the fabrics available. They also have the option of having a custom cheong sam made in Beijing, but the problem was that they did not have a proper fabric swatch book for me to look at.

I ended up going back to Ochi to ask them about the logistics of ordering a gown. She advised me to return in March to order my gown for August.

Hope this helps the other Vancouver brides looking for cheong sams! :)

Looks like Isabelle's Bridal in North Vancouver is having a sample sale. Not sure what's on sale but it's probably worth checking out.

And I just came from Chantilly Bridal where I got an Alvina Valenta for $1500 after taxes. They're closing so all their sample dresses are on sale 30% off and all their accessories, shoes, etc. I believe they're only open for another couple of weeks. Go, Go, Go!

Hey gals,

I actually went by the recommendation of some ladies on the weddingbells - west coast forum. We're using Bob Buzza from New Westminster (since we're getting married on Burbaby Mtn he's fairly close by). There were recommedations for other officiants there too.

Bob sounded amazing over the phone, and actually meets with the bride and groom beforehand to discuss the ceremony and do a bit of a mock run through. He also encouraged us to create a ceremony that is unique to us, and said I could email or call him whenever I have any questions.

Hope that helps a wee bit!

Hi!

I'm looking for a marriage commisioner in Vancouver... I've looked at the BC Vital Stats website and found a list of 28 marriage commisioners... I've contacted one so far (referral from a coworker, but she is moving away from Vancouver) so I'm back to the drawing board.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I need a few names to start off with (so I don't have to email everyone and interview everyone)

Thanks!

When you get a legal name change, EVERYTHING with your name gets changed - including your birth certificate.

You should be safe just "assuming" Mr Shortcake's last name. I think all you need to do is bring a copy of your marriage certificate along when you go to change your driver's license, etc.

"Entirely new last name" means the Jones to Black change to me. You would be applying for a legal change of name in that situation and in the hyphenated situation because there are no other documents (marriage certificates, birth certificates) preexisting with that name on it as proof, so the legal order serves as that proof.

sounds to me that it's like in Ontario. You don't actually have to do anything before the wedding. You just take his name on your marriage certificate and you're done.

How do you do it? Mr. Shortcake and I want the same last name (his) - but the application for change of name from the BC gov doesn't list "marriage" as one of the reasons for a name change....and on the website it says

"

Marriage is one situation where people may change their names
Many women start using their spouse’s surname. Actually, you have five choices for your surname when you get married:

First, you can keep the same family name that you had before the marriage, for example, your previous married surname if you were married before.

Second, you can take the surname of the person you’re marrying.

Third, you can use the family name that you had at birth or by adoption.

Fourth, you and your new spouse can apply for an entirely new last name. For example, Mary Smith and Robert Jones can be legally changed to Mary and Robert Black.

Fifth, you can apply to have a combined or hyphenated surname of both your spouse’s and your own surname.

How do you prove your chosen surname upon getting married?
Changing to your spouse’s surname doesn’t constitute a legal change of name under British Columbia’s Name Act. So if you choose to assume your spouse's surname, your marriage certificate would be used for verification. If you choose to keep a previous married surname, a copy of the marriage certificate from your previous marriage would be used for verification. If you choose to keep your birth surname, your birth certificate would be used for verification.

When do you need to apply for a legal change of name?
You have to apply for a legal name change if you want an entirely new last name or if you want a hyphenated surname."

"entirely new last name" is what gets me....is it referring to the wording above - the Jones to Black example? OR, does it mean taking your husband's name (which is "entirely new" to me!). My mom said she didn't have to fill out any forms, or pay any fees ($162 on the application I have)...has anybody else changed their name in BC? How did you do it?

I've been to a wedding at the chapel... it's very small. I would say you can only fit 80 people in there max. There were over 80 guests at the wedding I was at so people were packed in there... which was kind of uncomfortable b/c it was hot in the summer. Also, I found the walls a bit dark as well.
