Our final catering bill (which includes dishes, silverware, setup, gratuity for 6 servers and 2 bartenders, ice, passed hors d'oeuvres, plated salad, buffet, cake cutting and tax) was $45 pp. This is on the low end of what we found though, in Southern Maine.

It all depends on the location, there is no "average" price since the level of quality will vary from place to place.

The poster above is right, if it's at a venue that already has all the stuff, the price should include everything. But if you pick a venue that is a blank slate, then the caterer needs to charge extra for a rental company to bring all the tables, chairs, etc. and that adds up quickly.

It will all depend whether you want to be more creative and create your own space, or just go with the flow and pick what the venue offers.

Don't be afraid to ask each venue what their per person price includes. Tax, service charge, gratuity, etc. are sometimes tacked on separately to make the per person price seem lower.

If you have a hotel, it is inclusive of linens, table, silverware. If you use only a catering company they are usually only giving you the cost of food only and all the other stuff is extra

What is an average price for a caterer? The inclusive hotels I have found are anywhere from $80+ but I understand this includes tables, chairs, dishes, etc. Some prices I have found are around $20 or sometimes less - does this not include service or plates? Other places say you should average about $50pp. It seems like there is a large discrepency - am I missing something? What is normal?

Also planning from away - but the wedding isn't until next summer. I would really like to be along the coast somewhere but all the 'traditional?' places listed on places like the knot are out of our budget; aka $15,000 min for reception or $110 per person for venue rental ONLY. We are probably inviting around 120p. The event will be sort of vintage modern... I couldn't live without clean modern lines but I am also planning on throwing in some vintage elements to take a little of the edge off and throw in a romantic/elegant vibe - birdcage veil? Things could happen - Colors I am thinking shades of lime/kelly green and white with accents of navy. That is the other issue I have with the 'typical' reception venues, no maroon curtains/gold accents/etc..... I would be thrilled with an all white space - which is why I'm thinking tent? Any recommendations you can make my life a whole lot easier!!

I'm getting married on Labor Day weekend in Maine. I'm planning my wedding from away (ugh!) and I've relied a ton on weddingbee for ideas. It's great. I also LOVE ms. tiramisu's posts because we have a lot of similarities in our wedding - on the coast, blue, totally in a tent (ugh again!), similar first dance tastes...

Willworkforpeonies - what part of Maine are you thinking about for your wedding? I'm from Southern Maine, but getting married on Penobscot Bay (downeast). After planning for a while, I've got lots of ideas about venues.

You might have read about it, but I'm getting married at a private home in southern maine. Do you need ideas for venues? Mr. T and I looked at SO many!
