Hi jpals,

I know you posted this awhile ago, but I was born and raised in Savannah and am currently planning a wedding there- thought I might be able to help. Are you speaking about the Ships of the Sea Museum garden space behind the Scarborough House on MLK? That garden is GORGEOUS. We looked there but my wedding will be too big :(

If you're interested, my wedding planner has undoubtedly done something there in her many many years. Tricia Windom - you can PM me for more info if you're interested. Another place in the same area is Vick's on the River. They have an upper floor available and WONDERFUL food with a view of River Street and ships passing by.

As for catering, I love Trish McLeod ((912) 355-1600) or Nick Mueller at (912) 728-8150. My mom is a wedding cake baker, and I'd she'd be happy to share any information with you. She made Paula Deen's cake and knows most people the business.

Let me know and good luck!!

Hello fellow Chicagoan planning a wedding in the South!

I am planning my wedding in North Carolina on an island as well. I am going there in 2 weeks to make final choices on locations. I am a DIY to the max (because I love doing that kind of stuff and all my bridesmaids are very "crafty") and have found that working with a hotel coordinator allows me to make things even more personal. Wedding coordinators are great and have wonderful ideas, but I have just enjoyed the resort help I have used.

Also, as I'm sure you know, it is helpful to have someone where you are getting married who is willing to do a lot of little extra things for you. There are things that will just be harder to accomplish when you are farther away than if it was in our lovely city. My fiance's parents live in the area and we are able to ship things directly to their home for storage till the big day. They were also helpful (like all the other wonderful Bee's here) in giving us hints on the places to consider and steer you away from the not-so-wonderful places!

I am still choosing vendors for my wedding and am looking at the hotel's lists but approaching them independently and asking for pictures and references.

Good luck on planning your big day Rachel!

i am planning my wedding in st. simons, but planning from Atlanta (5 hours away.) our reception location is the Ocean Lodge (new and absolutely beautiful), we are using the wedding planner from the Ocean Lodge, as it was included in the cost. i am finding that st. simons is such a small place, the resort planner is working fine. let me know if you have any other questions -- as we are starting to figure out our vendors and other details.

I live on St. Simons and got married here 10 months ago. I just sent you a PM.

Also, I used a photographer that was n Hawaii that is now based in Savannah and travelled to St. Simons to do our pictures, so I can give you input on them as well. Finding a great photographer was one of my biggest challenges.

Yay for another St. Simons bride!

My FF (Future Fiance) and I are very interested in getting married on St. Simons Island, in Georgia. I would appreciate some advice on planning directly through a hotel (King & Prince Resort) verses using a wedding planner in the area. I live in the Chicagoland area so I would be planning everything from afar but I have visited the island and know the possible venues.

Is it easier to use the hotel's package of recommended vendors or go find my own? It seems like there's a lot of Savannah vendors that are willing to make the trip.

Thanks for your imput Bees!
Rachel

I live in coastal Georgia, an hour south of Savannah, but my parents live in Savannah, and it is a beautiful city. April, May and September are perfect here, but June through August are HOT and muggy. I got married here on the coast last year in mid-September, and it is my favorite month of the year. It's warm, but not oppressive, but not chilly at all, and everything is still green and lovely. October is nice too, but it starts to get cooler at night (in my opinion, but I like th hot weather). Savannah is wonderful. St. Simons Island (where I live) is gorgeous, too, and very popular for weddings. Let me know if you want more info on the area. Good luck!

Avoid late spring and all of summer! Savannah is amazingly beautiful. I would say October - November if you want warmer weather. January - March for cooler weather.
