LittlestBirds on "Seattle Hair and Makeup: Katie Cordery"

I've received a number of private messages inquiring about Katie Cordery's hair and makeup services here in Seattle, and asking me to send photos. I thought it might be more efficient and useful for me to just post a thread.

Katie Cordery runs a one-woman mini-salon in the basement of her home in Wallingford. She does cuts, color, and of course on-site hair styling and makeup for weddings. My assessment: her work is absolutely top-notch and I recommend her without reservation. (And I can be picky when it comes to stylists).

Katie's prices:

Bridal hair updo (including trial): $100

Bridesmaid/mom updo: $35/person

Makeup (for bride, maids, moms, anyone, and includes free trial for bride): $20

Travel fee: None. Katie will come to you for free. False eyelashes are also free.

Why Katie's awesome: Super-flexible (she'll come to you, she's available for your engagement photo hair/makeup too, you don't have to work with a crammed salon schedule to find time with her), relaxed and wholly dedicated to you (she'll spend all morning getting everything just right, no sense of her needing to rush off to another wedding, you get to know her personally/she gets to know you before the wedding instead of dealing with whoever happens to be on staff that day like you do in some salons), and of course fantastic prices and beautiful, professional work.

Why Katie's less awesome: She's only one person and has no assistant, so it isn't possible for her to do updos and makeup for the entire bridal party + moms. I had to book Salon Maison to do makeup for my maids. Salon Maison also did a gorgeous job, but their prices are higher and I definitely felt like we were just one appointment during a busy day for them - whereas with Katie, I almost felt like she was just another one of my friends relaxing and laughing the day away with us.

Salon Maison prices:

Makeup: $55/person

Travel fee: $20 (to Woodinville)

These photos are all from my wedding; please email Katie (manitou79@hotmail.com) for other samples of her work. Most of these are cropped/zoomed to display the hair and makeup, so please don't judge my (wonderful) photographers if some of the images have strange composition or are out of focus. All images Gash Photography.

My bridesmaid on the left asked Katie to do a 1940s-style sideswept updo. Katie provided the hairclip.

A couple of you asked how I'd compare Katie to Swink Style Bar. They both do gorgeous work! The first time I had my hair done at Swink, I loved it so much that I booked them six months in advance to do my hair again on New Year's Eve. Katie's prices are lower, but the main reason why I chose her was that I had a bridal apartment in my venue to get ready in - so I was certain I wanted an onsite stylist. I wanted the calm of being in our own space to get ready, instead of a busy salon. Swink is definitely faster, though, so if you don't mind going to them, and you have a tight timeline and need hair and makeup done quickly, they're your better bet. It just comes down to what you need as far as timing and travel on your wedding day.

Feel free to ask more questions in the comments or PM me.

Okay so I am recently engaged (yay!!) and am having the hardest time finding a venue! We live near Everett, WA and want to find something within a 45 minute drive. We were originally looking in Snohomish, but the venues are like $3,000!! IN SNOHOMISH! On top of that, you need to have their caterer! Ideally, we want to self-cater. I want a barn yard, vintage, diy wedding! :)

I really just want a barn. Too bad I don't know someone with a barn.. wouldn't that be too easy? So Snohomish county brides, ALL suggestions are WELCOMED!

Looking for...

Self-cater, BARN YARD/Back yard, relatively cheap. I don't know what you consider cheap, but I think I'm looking for $2k or under. Advice on what I should be paying for this type of venue is welcomed as well. Is $3k reasonable? Thanks everyone!!

I LOVE three Jim Hjelm dresses - JH 8800, JH 8761 and JH 8850 - but can't find a sample anywhere because they're from previous seasons! La Belle Elaine assured me each could be ordered, but I would have to purchase it without trying on.

So, my Seattle bees, I'm wondering if anyone with one of these dresses would be willing to let me try it on. I just can bring myself to drop that much money, sight unseen.

Please let me know! Thank you so much for your help :)

Cadence on "Thermography Invitations: custom design + printer vs local vendor vs nationwide"

Hello Seattle Bees,

It's time for me to figure out my invitations.

Here's what I know so far: 100 invites, tight budget, hoping to spend under $5/invite for everything (embellishments envelopes postage etc.), I like the feeling of raised text, gold ink

My head is spinning from all the options between paper and color and wording. Oy! So I'm here to solicit some help about where to get my invites.

Here's what I figure are my options.

The DIY route: custom rubber stamp + ink + embossing powder + heat gun

Custom design in some kind of computer program + printer that does thermography

Wedding invites from websites like wedding paper divas (can add embellishments later)

I know some bees have purchased invitation kits and printed them out on their home inkjet. My inkjet is too unreliable and I don't think its possible to print the raised text this way. I mean you might be able to get away with adding the embossing powder to the invite as soon as it comes out of the printer but I dunno if I'm skilled enough.

Seattle bees, where did you get your thermography/raised text invites? Any local or not local vendors/printers/invite websites you would recommend? If you don't mind how much did it cost?

I'm sad this board is so dead these days, I would love to hear more about my fellow Seattle-ites' planning! I'm not engaged yet, but like to read about my area! (I've already read all the bees' stories who were from anywhere near the Pacific Northwest!)

Am I the only one hoping each time a new bee is announced that they are from this neck of the woods? It's so fun when you know the places and things they mention!
