Hey girls!

I know there is an old post from rasgoola, but let's reintroduce ourselves! I know that several of my faves from this board (fizicsgirl, rasgoola, and sonipapdi come to mind) have already gotten married...I want to meet you new bees :)

I'm mechiebaby, I'm white but my FI is Tamil/Malaysian, we'll be having a big fat Hindu wedding in Malaysia in 2011. I am currently trying to figure out if I want the whole white wedding deal or not... so far feeling no, but who knows, I have time :)

We got engaged this past July, it was a total surprise, in fact the first words out of my mouth were, "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" (yes, I know, how sweet and romantic of me hehe) and I can't wait to be married :)

Ok, your turn!

...to wear a Dupatta and an "American" style wedding dress. The dress I have picked out is antique gold and ivory with embroidery on the top and along the bottom of the dress and train. The design and applique of the dress kind of reminded me of a more toned down, Westernized lengha. To tie it into my Indian fusion wedding I am thinking of getting a nice gold or ivory net dupatta with a lightly embroidered design that matches the dress (if I can find it). Would that look strange? I think it might be a nice blend of both cultures and my fiance is planning on wearing a sherwani for both days of the wedding so I want to make sure we coordinate. I'm looking for some pictures that might help to visualize my idea...

Hi everyone:

I will be going to India for ~10 days in February. I plan on getting all of my wedding clothes at that time. I also need to buy clothes for my family, as no one will be able to go to India before our wedding.

So I have several questions. 1) Are there any shops in Delhi and/or Mumbai you recommend? I need to shop for everyone, so basically I need ~7 saris, ~9 lenghas, ~4 sherwanis, ~4 lenghas for young kids, and some other outfits for men.

2) Anyway, my fiance and I will be paying for the wedding, so we do not want to spend too much money. I want to pay $7000 at most for all these clothes. Is there a place where we can get AFFORDABLE yet quality clothes?

3) I prefer to get everything in one place or in shops that are close to one another. Is there anything you recommend?

4) I also need all the jewelry, shoes, etc. that come with the outfits. Are there any places in particular that you recommend?

Your input is very appreciated. Thanks!

runskiclimb on "Cocktail Hour Timing"

My question is similar to the one posted by MeelaBeela titled "Programs and timing and such", but slightly different so I figured I would start a new post.

My fiance is Indian and his parents have warned us that many of their guests will not expect to arrive on time. At his sister's wedding a few years ago, they had an hour of cocktail hour before the ceremony, so people could slowly trickle in. I was originally not crazy about this idea, but I realized if having the ceremony first meant having people showing up and interrupting or missing the ceremony altogether (it will be a relatively short ceremony), then it made sense.

My mother absolutely hates this idea. She's worried that her guests will be confused since it's not what they would expect. Plus, we're having a lot of guests, so we were hoping to have a cocktail hour after the ceremony to give us time to talk to everyone, and my mom doesn't like the idea of everyone seeing me in my dress before the ceremony.

We're meeting with the venue coordinator next week to find out if it's even a possibility to do anything other than the ceremony first. Before we meet with her, I was hoping to get some input on a few questions:

Is there a way to compromise so both sets of parents are happy?

Can the invitation just say 6:00, or does it need to specify more of a timeline? (Ceremony, reception, and cocktail hour are all same location)

If we have a cocktail hour before the ceremony, should it include alcohol or just appetizers?

Sorry this was so long! Thanks for the help!

Hey girls!

So, I've lurked for a few months around the waiting boards, but my boy and I just recently got engaged. We're planning to have a big fat Hindu wedding in Malaysia (where 99% of his family still lives) and then a party/reception back here in the DC area (where we live). I love reading the bee's adventures, and follow a few other wedding blogs, but I'm having trouble finding bloggers talking about Hindu weddings... I am not familiar with most of the traditions and expectations, etc, and would just love to learn more (without having to bother my FMIL with a thousand questions). Do any of you keep up a blog, or have any suggestions for good reads? Thanks!! :)

Seems like there are some other Indian/South Asian brides in the boards so I thought we should get this section going again with some introductions!

I am Indian and my FI is Irish/German. We are getting married July 18th and having a full Hindu ceremony.

Looking forward to hearing more about you all!

I'm curious to hear what color palettes South Asian brides are choosing. Also, are you guys choosing according to the season?

I'm not a very traditional bride so I am veering away from the red/yellow (marigold) combination I have seen in so many Indian wedding pictures. I do want to inject color and vibrancy into the wedding but something more modern and trendy. So far Hot Pink/Orange and a Peacock color scheme (teal, purple) look great but I think they're probably quite popular in general.

Any other ideas?

So I am trying to plan a Hindu ceremony...I have not been to a Hindu wedding since I was like 10 years old. My question for you girls (and guys) is what type of music are you having during your ceremony? live music, such as a sitar player? I am going to have an aisle to walk down for the bridesmaids/parents/groom/me, what type of music/what songs do you suggest for this?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I visited a few venues this weekend and was told by one coordinator (who says she's handled many South Asian weddings) that Indian weddings never start on time and planning any kind of timeline is pointless. Is this true?? My family is rather punctual and most venues only give you 5 - 6 hours of use for their facility. Should I worry about people being hours late? Is is ridiculous to keep the ceremony and recpetion on a timeline???
