My engagment ring is a claddaugh ring, the traditional Irish engagement ring. My dad's family is part Irish (though very much Irish at heart :-D) and I'd always loved the symbolism of the claddaugh. The heart symbolizes love, the hands symbolize friendship, and the crown symbolizes loyalty. I'd dreamed of having one as an engagement ring every since I heard about them when I was about 12 or 13. I mentioned this to a couple of my friends, who conveniently passed on the message to my fiance when he was looking for a ring. I didn't know he knew, though, and had kind of decided I wasn't going to tell him because I knew that whatever he gave me would be special because it was from him. But then on valentine's day this year, he took me to an Irish restaurant called &quot;the Claddaugh&quot; (apparently his original plan was to propose that night, but the ring didn't arrive in time) and I began to hope. Sure enough, when he did finally propose a few weeks later, he had a claddaugh :-).

If you're looking for a more modern setting (and you aren't getting married during commencement) what about the Stata Center at MIT?  I think it's kind of ugly from the outside, but inside has a lot of overpasses, odd angles, bright colors, textures (wood, cement, metal).  It could make for some cool pictures.  But it's so weirdly layed out, I would suggest you or your photog scout locations in advance, because some of the coolest locations are kind of hidden. fizicsGirl's suggestion was great! The Weeks Footbridge over the Charles River is a very "Cambridge" location. However, be careful about the direction you are shooting - your photographer should be on the non-Harvard side of the bridge. In that particular picture, the buildings that loom up are the Leverett House towers and they are OOOGLAY. if you stand to the right of the bridge and look left (essentially scootch to the right of where this photo was taken), the view is of the older Harvard dorms and they are beautiful. You didn't say when in june your wedding is, but if it's not during commencement, Harvard Yard is traditionally beautiful (there are two sections - Old Yard, where all the brick building-dorms are) and Tercentenary Theatre (where commencement is held every year - beautiful). It will have been freshly re-seeded to be green and plush for graduation. For a more secluded location, there is also Radcliffe Yard a few blocks away, as well as the Longfellow House/Park on Brattle Street. You can also consider locations at Tufts, since you are in the area. Sorry I can't give you more details on that, though.

What about the Harvard Footbridge?  Very pretty location.  If you want more natural, how about Cambridge Common (the park, not the bar obviously).  If I recall there is some parking possible near the water, trickier right near the Common but possible a couple blocks away.  If you have some kind of chauffered transport the driver could just stay with the car.  Plenty of side streets near both those locations without much traffic, but you probably wouldn't want to leave a car double parked and unattended. We haven't completely set up the schedule for our wedding day yet, but my fiance & I are trying to come up with ideas for places to take pictures (with our wedding party and/or just the two of us--for a first look!!). My bridesmaids and I are staying at the Hotel Marlowe the night before the wedding (this June), and then the ceremony is at a park right at the edge of Somerville/Cambridge/Medford...  ny ideas?? We also haven't entirely figured out transportation yet but will have cars so somewhere that has parking nearby would be important! Thanks for any suggestions in advance. :)   (And thank you everyone for being so helpful on my other board posts so far!)

Sorry for my slow reply, but yes, we did have to pay for our Wedding Window site, I honestly can't recall how much it is now! Oh, and the song on the site is a remake of Umbrella song by Marie Digby - I love it, I am going to use it for our wedding for sure!
