@Miss Apricot: I actually don't kill mosquitos, household spiders, etc. I will acknowledge that I have a somewhat buddist perspective to live in that I don't belief it is my job to take the life of any living thing...insect or otherwise.

I realise that your wedding has almost certainly come and gone, but I had a quick suggestion:

"The way the Methodist church does it is to come to the front, get your bread, dip it in the cup and go back to your seat."

In the Methodist-esque tradition I was raised in, servers handed around small shot glasses of (fake) wine and pieces of bread. You held these in your hands and prayed whilst everyone was served. Then, after everyone, including the preacher (who doesn't eat/drink ahead of you) has both elements in their hands, you pray together, eat the bread at the same time, and drink the (fake) wine at the same time. This might solve the problem, because people can then just subtly ignore the bread and wine as it is passed around, and it won't be obvious who has taken them and who hasn't.

I would ideally love to do both but unfortunately it's just too expensive too hire all of the musicians- it would have to be one or the other.

@Miss Tattoo: Hooray for swing dancing!

I guess some off-beat things we're doing are:

Having a bridesmaid wear a tux

Girls are not wearing the same dress (I know it's not that off-beat, but it definitely is for my ridiculously conservative family)

Not having a ceremony in a religious building (only because churches around here are like, 1000+ to get married in. I didn't think the Big Guy worked that way...)

My brother is walking me down the aisle. Again, not that off-beat, but is for my family.

No garter toss/bouquet toss

Great thread! I love seeing everyone's ideas!

In my opinion, my wedding seems pretty "traditional" except for 1 thing: having the WEDDING. My first husband and I had a Civil Ceremony at the courthouse. We wanted to save money and have a "big wedding" so everyone could attend. Well, 6 months after we got married he died. Over the next 2 1/2 years I moved across the country, met someone else, fell in love and made another trip to the courthouse. Several different circumstances pushed us to this decision and we both decided to wait on our "big wedding." Everyone is going to have their own opinions regarding this situation but we could care less! Just because I've already been married once before and my JOP Ceremony "was my wedding" doesn't mean I can't have a bigger wedding. In our eyes yes, we're married...BUT, we want to have a celebration. A celebration of family and friends coming together, witnessing and have a role in the union of two people who are madly in love. I'm not bashing anyone else's beliefs or saying that a JOP Ceremony isn't a wedding. I'm simply saying that I didn't sign any paperwork or see any fine print that said once you've been "married" you can't have a bigger wedding with all the bells and whistles. So, here are some other things that might seem a bit "different"

-A pink dress for me
-White pinstripe suits (with Spectator shoes)
-So far we're thinking about The Hustle or Teach Me How To Dougie for our first dance
-Father/Daughter dance will be Brian Setzer or a rock song

We've just started planning so there isn't too much to add yet. Just thought I'd share the little bit we do have so far.

I love soft and romantic in the church. Trumpets are pretty much only good for the recessional, but not for the rest. Although it would be awesome when you're leaving the church!

maybe choose both! do the strings for the prior-to music (bridesmaids and your entrance) and then do the louder music for when you two are walking back down the aisle after the ceremony

My fiance and I are getting married in a gorgeous cathedral in (st. patrick's in norwich, CT) and we are trying to decide what to do for our ceremony music.. our decision has come between a string trio or a combo of a trumpet, timpani, and the church grand pipe organ..

on one hand I love the romantic sound of the strings for walking down the aisle (goes along with the vintage theme of our wedding) but on the other hand, the combo of the organ and trumpet is so majestic and the sound resonates in the church..I love both for two different reasons.. please help- what would you choose???

St. Mary's RCC in downtown Newport is absolutely gorgeous and has a neat history. I toured it with one of my Catholic friends when were in college. JFK and Jackie were married there.

There is also a Catholic college in the town, Salve Regina College and they have amazing mansions on the campus. They are open to outsiders being wed in the campus chapel.

Hi! My fiance and I live in Dartmouth, MA, but are looking to get married in Newport, RI. We would like to have a traditional ceremony at a catholic church. Since we are not from the area, we aren't familiar with the churches in Newport. Has anyone found an accommodating catholic church in Newport for "outsiders".

Thanks!
