I need a REALLY AWESOME DJ who will pump up the crowd and get them excited!! He needs to be charismatic and he HAS TO ANNOUNCE THE BRIDAL PARTY. (there was a DJ at my friend's wedding that didn't) He also needs to cater to my eclectic musical tastes (I like some obscure bands and I definitely want them played at my wedding. I need to know he can find these bands and play them for me.)

I don't know where to start! Help!

FI and I were in the same boat, I was just the one that didn't want a DJ. We decided to set up a laptop with GrooveShark.com. We are going to set up a playlist and then hook that up to the speakers. We will provide a GrooveShark station in a corner of the reception hall and, if a guest would like to add a song, they are more than welcome to do so. We're actually pretty excited about it. Maybe look into this?

After a long conversation, the FI and I are at an impass. He is opposed to a DJ whereas I think having someone controling and monitoring the entertainment is a good idea.

Now, we don't have to have one of those over the top, in all of the guests faces, dragging people to the dancefloor DJ's, but I am sure a person/group exists that keeps things moving, on schedule, yet full of energy and fun.

Since we are on a limited budget, FI was thinking we could have live entertainment during the first part of the reception and then switch over to an ipod playlist with songs that RSVPers sent in prior to the event. I've seen this go down before and when there is no rhyme or reason to the tunage, people stray and wind up not dancing/having fun.

My group of friends will be movers and shakers, but then again... I'm not sure if there is no one regulating the FUN!

What are you doing for entertainment? I just don't want to be bored and bothered by people all night... I want to let loose a little and have a good time with some good tunes!

We're planning a wedding multiple states away, so it was impossible to meet with DJs, even though I felt really strongly about meeting them beforehand. But, we got some recommendations, read a ton of reviews, and had a 45 minute call with our DJ before hiring him, so I felt great about him from that. So, I think it's possible to do it without meeting with them, but you should definitely get some recommendations and chat on the phone a couple times.

I would definitely meet with them in person - you can get a better feel for their personality that way.

The two I met with were willing to come to me. Another one wanted me to drive out an hour and I ended up cancelling. Another wanted me to see them in action (another hour away). And then another refused to give me any price range until we met (which I thought was ridiculous). I wasn't 100% happy with my DJ - he was fine... but just kinda blah. But, I picked him because he was punctual and had a backup plan for his backup plan which was really nice.

@yellowshoe: That's how I felt about it too. It's just so much driving! Ok, thank you soo much. I was about to give up, haha. But, you're right its important to meet with the dj since there's so little to go off of when booking them and its so important to get a good dj.

We drove all over Orange County to meet with DJs. I think you have to meet them otherwise you won't know if your personalities match. We went through a few of them before we met a DJ that we instantly clicked with.

I'm currently looking for a dj for our wedding and I'm trying to meet them to get a feel for them but all of them are making me drive all over LA --> fullerton, pasadena, ventura to meet with them. I've hit traffic and spent hours driving and I'm tired! I don't want to drive anymore, have any of you experienced this driving all over for the djs convenience or do you make them come to you or did you just book him/her based on the phone conversation??

We had one of DHs coworkers do the DJ, he did a good job except that his computer crashed the night before so he lost some of the songs that we had requested. If they had been a pro, they would have had that system on a backup. To me, missing a few trivial songs was worth the $2000 we saved. Overall, I was pleased with the job that he did and he was very sweet to do it for the $200 he asked for. We did throw in a card for dinner for him and his wife to a nice restaurant as a thank you.

I had the same problem. My FI wanted to get his old high school buddy to DJ for cheap. After several weeks and debating I ended up booking a professional DJ. My DJ will do introductions, play different types fo music for all ages, has lighting, cordless microphone, suggested songs, knows exact timeline because has been doing it for years.... CRITICAL STUFF in my opinion. Not taking my chances with a friend JUST TO SAVE MONEY. Good luck.
