Thanks for all the advice! I found out that sta.com doesn't have ANY United flights, just AA and others. So that option is out. Looks like if we want to be on the same flight we have to go straight through united. Bummed though, because 1400 is a lot for just one ticket. My grandma has 81,000 and one ticket to Greece is 60,000.

Airfare, especially using miles and discounted sites is so tricky! You just never really know what will be available and what won't even a day from now, let alone months from now.

To be totally safe, you'll need to book through United at full price now and book the other ticket through miles. Another (riskier) option is to book with the miles on the flight you want now for the one ticket, and just wait for your discount site to (hopefully) have the seat you want available in a few months.

As for seating, I've found that United is one of the worst airlines for changing seating after you have booked. They usually let you choose your seat at the time of booking (not sure how it works on sta.com) and then you have to wait to make any more changes until 24 hours before your flight. If you are a United Mileage Plus member and booked using your number, then you might be allowed to change seats after booking. I'd recommend just calling the airline's customer service number and asking what happens if you book through them for one ticket and on points for another, how does seating work?

Finally, considering that United is a Star Alliance member you are actually able to use United points on any of the Star Alliance airlines that fly to your destination. It's usually much trickier than booking directly on the United website, but you can often stretch your points much further. Not knowing how many points your awesome grandma is giving you, I'm not even sure that would help.

Flyertalk.com is a forum that has great advice for using and maximizing points.

I'm getting married around the same time as you (and same location!) and I've had many people suggest Yellowstone. That time of year is also great for Southern Utah (Zion, Bryce), and you could make your way down to Vegas. Or Disneylad is only 16 hours away!

You have to have a 4x4 to get to Lapa Rios as well but their packages includes transfers to and from in a 4x4 so we are going to have them take us to the Oxygen Jungle Villas (we will have to pay them a little extra). We probably won't rent anything else since we are only staying one night and we will be pretty booked and most likely will not have much time to explore on our own.

My FH and I don't have a need for "things" so we were going to register for our honeymoon. Does anyone recommend a specific site and if so, why?

We are trying to keep the fees for our guests and ourselves to a minimum.

Any suggestions are appreciated!
