Usually that is done so that people who get the invitation and are his parents' friends will be able to identify the groom as someone they know, especially if he has a common last name. It's totally not required and is really up to you. The other poster is right about only requesting the honor of your presence in a house of worship.  Even if you're getting married by a religious officiant somewhere else, you would request the pleasure of their company.
