Hey twinsies!!!! June 23rd 2012 for me too. I am having a casual but elegant Sonoma wine country wedding. Getting married in a beautiful redwood forest surrounded by vineyards. I have lived in this area all my life and can't wait to get married here. Only 50 guests and fairly low key....with the exception of our 18 piece big/swing band. Love it!

@TiffanyMM: Hahaha! That is such a cute story! And one you can smile about when you remember your Mom and share with others when they ask how you met.

By the way, I can see my teenage self's reaction being pretty much the same. "You want to do what? No way." Lol!

So glad to hear that your Grandmother's doing well! And that you flew down to see her and go dress-shopping. My mentality lately has been like yours - involve important people now because you really don't know when their time may come. And you bring up a good point - the rest really is out of my hands. It's coming to grips with that that's difficult sometimes.

My Grandmother doesn't have any terribly serious health problems: diabetes and high blood pressure that she's managing with medication. But my Grandfather didn't either. He suffered a stroke in 2010 and was partially paralyzed; was recuperating and going through rehabilitation and was making great progress. Then started to deteriorate after a blood clot and eventually died of renal failure last March. He was ALWAYS on the go and so active and even though he was almost 85, his health problems blind-sided us. So now I ask my Grandmother weekly how she's doing, how her doctor's appointments are going, etc.

@Jacqui90: Thank you for your kind words. I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandmothers. Sometimes, the joy of wedding planning gets lost when thinking about those close to you that might not be able to make it.

If you are able to get married in the same church as your parents and Mom's parents, that would be such a great connection to have to them. You could even emphasize during the ceremony or on the invitation or program the significance of that location. Maybe display a photo of both couples on their wedding day if you have any. It would be a great way for your Grandmother to feel included even if she can't be there.

i hope she is able to see you walk down the aisle, it is hard to go through. if she is not there, having a memorial for her as well (for example lighting a candle) will maybe help you, and i am sure your grandfather will be looking down on you on your special day :)

my wedding won't be til 2015 at the earliest, and my maternal grandmother is 84 with dementia, my other grandmother is 88 and lives thousands of miles away, in Wyoming , USA. My maternal grandfather passed away when my mum was 9, so I never met him, and my other grandfather passed away when I was seven, and had only seen him a couple of times, due to living so far away. One of my cousins got married 2 and a half years ago and that was probably the last time my american grandmother would visit Australia, and every now and then I cry knowing that she probably won't be able to see me walk down the aisle, and my other grandmother may not either. My mum's parents got married in the church where i want to get married, and so did my parents, so I guess in that way, if my maternal grandmother isn't around then I will remember her in that way. That I walked up the aisle where she once walked.

Sorry for the long post, just this topic tugs at my heart. I truly hope your grandmother can be there to celebrate with you, and she will be, either in body or in spirit :)

@icetea: I'm glad it has worked out for you!

I think it depends on the vendors and maybe the area.

We had a 2 year engagement and as soon as we got engaged we booked most main things, church, venue, flowers, cake, caterer 2 years in advance and that was all fine.

A few said things to us like woah you are getting in early but were nice about it and honestly it took a lot of stress off closer to the wedding.

Even my fiance thinks we can wait to put things off like downpayments, and planning!!! It drives me up the wall. Theres 7 and a half months to our wedding!!!!! At one point it was 2 years till the wedding!!!! Time has flown by really fast.

Im trying to get things done as soon as I can! Otherwise I will be completely swamped the last couple months before the wedding. And I dont want to be swamped. Tust me, do what you can when u can, do any DIY projects early if u can too, because they do take time.

Best of luck. :)

Happy to say it all worked out. We're still a year + out so who knows if our vendors will drop out because of the economy but fingers crossed they won't. We gave up on the rude ones and found really awesome people who seemed interested in our business and happy to take our deposits. AND guranteed us the rate that is in place the time we put down our deposit. Our caterer said that the wedding industry is actually doing pretty well right now despite the economy. She said a lot of people are DIYing but the big stuff like floral, catering, and venues are still doing okay according to her. But yay we have our venue booked, an inn for the weekend, wedding coordinator, cake, catering, and DJ :)
