Sign a contract! Two of the make-up artists I was considering said that I didn't need to leave a deposit or sign a contract -- I found this worrisome, so I went elsewhere. Honestly 200 for a 2.5 hour drive is outrageous! I commute an hour to work everyday -- two hours round trip, and my TOTAL gas bill for the WEEK is $75.00 (that is a minimum of 10 hours driving plus weekends).

I am a vendor (wedding photographer) and I know good and well that it's my job to anticipate expenses like these. Yes, it's a squeeze these days, but it's just not fair to surprise your clients with new expenses just because you did not anticipate them.

I have to defend the vendors with regards to Salty's comment.... for the most part, it's not that the vendor is being sneaky or unprofessional it's that the cost of living is rising very fast, especially on the west coast.

While I agree with Salty that you should lock in your prices and ask vendors if there are any additional fee's they should know about, the truth is, if you are booking an event a year out, things do change and that $3.99 at the pump last summer just went to $5.55 for this summer. For a small business to lose that difference commuting job after job, it adds up.

Now if they are charging you for driving 16miles like the other post on the boards.... that's what I'd call sneaky

Please sign a contract with your vendors! This will lock in your prices and prevent sneakiness like this. It's really unprofessional to stick you for extra money after you've already agreed on a price.

My make up artist was charging me $100 for the travel fee (2.5 hr drive one way). She just contacted me to let me know that because of higher gas prices, she will have to increase the travel fee to $200.

Just wondered if anyone had the experience of working with vendors who ended up tacking on little extra charges to the price... such as a $90 shipping charge or other little bits.

All these little extras seem to keep popping up. I can't anticipate them and they are adding up.

Is this typical?
