My BF and I have been together for just over 5 years. We knew that we'd wait until we'd both graduated from college, which brought us to May '08. Then he says that he wants to live together before we get engaged, which brought us out to August '08. Then he says he wants all of his friends to be there, so I'm thinking Boston Marathon in April '09. Now it's "I want to wait unti we're stable." I know he means financially, so we can pay for our wedding ourselves without going into debt, but COME ON!

I've had so many This Is It moments, I can barely count them. There was, of course, the Jim-Pam tying shoe trick (before we'd even seen the episode, mind you). There was a "Leah, will you ma... ke breakfast this morning?" And just about any other way he could try to fake me out.

There was one instance, though, that I thought FOR SURE would be it. Coldplay is our favorite band, and "Yellow" has been our song through most of our relationship (it was on the first time we said I Love You... and he sang it to me in the song. I wasn't sure if he was actually saying it, but he confirmed that after the fact lol). We went to a concert last October, and the band starts to play the song. The BF wraps his arms around me, looks into my eyes, and starts singing...

and nothing. I thought FOR SURE it would happen... our favorite band, them playing our song, etc. etc. etc and nada.

But I've since accidentally found out that he has my great-grandmother's and his grandmother's rings, so I think it's coming soon! We've talked about him using my great-grandmother's stone in a new setting, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)

urgh! it's all i think about lately ladies! despite having never formally discussed it, i have had at least two scare moments, but the freakiest one ironically happened when i was totally not ready. we were dating for just over a year (we met the weekend after Thanksgiving) and I had decided to spend Christmas with his family. we all converged at his grandparent's house, exchanged gifts, enjoyed a fun evening together. the two of us and his parents were staying at his aunt and uncle's place, and we end up getting back about 10PM. we're getting ready for bed, and as I'm sitting on my bed taking off my shoes, he walks over to me with something behind his back. needless to say, my heart is POUNDING and i'm totally freaking out! he brings a box around in front of him and says "I got you a little something else". turns out it was a really cute silver bracelet, not a ring. I breathed a sigh of relief at that moment, but what i wouldn't kill to have it happen again now! arrrgh!!!

My bf and I have been together for four years and he bought the ring about two weeks ago, so I am totally in suspense. I know when he does propose, he wont be doing anything fancy, but everytime he says something sweet or does anything remotely out of the ordinary my heart races and I get all giddy. It really is ridiculous how impatient I am....

@alishaneva: pretty cool that you get a platinum ring because it's in a catalytic converter! and I was lmbo about the I have a surprise for you, I bet he's doing it to throw you off. He will have a series of these surprises so that when it's the ring you won't expect it.

Oh boy ... I'm not quite at this point yet - but I AM not looking forward to it! It's bad enough that last Friday, Loverboy calls me and says 'I'm picking you up from work and I have a surprise for you..." and his surprise? He finally cut his hair the way I've been telling him would look so good on him. Cute, right? Oy. Of course, this was right after we were talking about how there's platinum in every catalytic converter and he asked me if I would want an e-ring made out of that platinum (we're both really into cars) so he does keep raising my hopes a little more each day. But I'm not too concerned - it's just so.frustrating.when.he.does.those.things.

I recommend that you try to stop thinking about it. My fiance and I looked at rings together, and after that I was always wondering when it was going to happen, and was constantly predicting that it was going to happen. And then when it did, I wasn't surprised at all! I kind of ruined the moment for myself by constantly thinking about it. Oh well, it's done... and we'll be married in 2 weeks from today, so I suppose that's all that matters!

First, I'd just like to say that I love this site and this forum thread. I just stumbled across it last night and I'm already addicted.

It's comforting to know that I'm not the only engagement obsessed woman out there. Reading all your stories is actually helping me understand how my bf thinks.

So here's a little funny story...

A little background: been together 3 years in Nov. and currently living together (1+ years).

Last Dec. we took our first trip to Disneyworld (we're from CA). We had fancy dinners planned, stayed in a lovely resort hotel...the works. All my friends were telling me that this was it, so I was convinced as well. We decided not to get each other Christmas presents because the trip was $6K and we were already broke from that. We settled on just one "small" gift that we would pack and present on our trip.

So while we're packing, he mutters something about taking my gift on as a carry on because he didn't want to risk it getting lost. Then at the airport he tells me that he's worried that what if he has to open his bag at the security checkpoint and I see my gift...on and on. So of course, I'm thinking, this is it.

On Christmas Eve he hints that it's an expensive gift. I give him crap that it was supposed to be a "small" gift. He says it's small, but it was just expensive. At this point, I'm reeling, but I'm sure I'm getting engaged.

Christmas morning in the hotel comes and we exchange gifts. It's a lovely Ipod Touch (which I had been saying I wanted for quite some time). Oh boy, I felt stupid.

Anyway, I learned not to build things up too much. We're still happily together. No ring yet, but we do talk about it. He definitely wants it to be a surprise and he doesn't want me to even suspect. So I've stopped pestering him about it.

Thanks everyone!
