My venue works the opposite. We pay for the number of guests we turn in a week before. Then we can add and pay for more guests on the day of (up to 10% of our guest count will be guaranteed food). However, if we have fewer guests then we still pay for the number we originally turned in.

I haven't decided, but am considering turning in a slightly lower number so I don't get stuck paying for a no show. Once I get all of my RSVPs in and see who is coming, I'll see if 1) subtracting maybe 2 from the list would or would not mess up the number of tables needed and 2) if I trust the people on my guest list to show up. I do have a few cousins and uncles that I wouldn't be surprised if they RSVPed then didn't show.

We're having a small wedding so that we can have a nice dinner. 2 no shows at $50 a plate would make me unhappy. However, living in the south a buffet or casual reception is very common so not everyone will understand the necessity of RSVPing and then following through.

my venue will charge a certain % if more guest comes then the # I turn in, did anyone try to avoid this by adding and paying for a few extra plates to avoid the charge and to save trouble?
