We had a rustic lakeside wedding and the reception was held in a rustic stone & timber open-air pavilion. It was the perfect setting for our southern food favorites: passed mini grilled cheese sandwiches & vidalia onion tarts, buffet of shrimp & grits, mac & cheese, fried green tomatoes, fried okra, summer salad, etc. We had rave reviews on the food. The favors were ice cold glass-bottled coca-colas and bags of roasted peanuts. Both were a hit!

My friend got married on a farm, and they had kabobs - chicken, beef, and veggie ones. I thought it was perfect!

Go with what you like, it's your day!

@Megss604 -- Dude, if you know anyone who can invest in a restaurant, that could be a goldmine restaurant if there are none like it! I'd ask your caterer for a good list of what's "in season" and then pull from the restaurant menu I showed you... it would be great "rustic farm" dishes with an "at home" flavor!

@falfie: Thanks for that idea! I hadn't thought of that ... unfortunately the farm raises mostly fruit, so there isn't too much we can do with it. I planned our wedding to have a dinner reception (something I am regretting!). But I think we are going to incorporate the fresh fruit as favors.

@GaBGal: That restaurant looks awesome! You'd think with so many farms in the Midwest there would be a restaurant like that around here too ...

there is a restaurant in DC that is really good... called Founding Farmers. Everything on the menu is from local farmers and the menu is so delicious sounding -- I want to try everything!

You can see their menu here, you might find some good ideas!

Is there a way you could have the caterer use the food that is produced on the farm, and then you could just pick your favorite foods and have them make that? That way it would be meaningful and something you actually like.

Hi all! My fiance and I are getting married next June at a working farm. Our ceremony is in the apple orchard and our reception is in an open-air barn that is a short walk from the ceremony site. We are starting to look at caterers, but we really have no ideas for the reception food. I want to do something that will go with our venue, but neither of us want to go for BBQ or that kind of fare.

Does anyone have any ideas? If you've had a barn/rustic wedding before, what kind of food did you serve?
