I had at least 80% of the money we will end up spending set aside before we were even engaged. He has the majority of our down paymet for our future house, which will be 20% down. In some ways I think we are fortunate to be well established and in our 30's, we've each been able to save money over the years. Our joint savings account is money we are setting aside for post wedding and post new home purchase.

We had zero saved before becoming engaged. We hadn't really thought as far as wedding expenses. Neither one of us knew anything about weddings. We wound up having a $10-15,000 black-tie elopement (depends on what you like to include in the budget: $15,000 is honeymoon, rings, everything) which we paid for ourselves and one month of credit card debt. We could have pushed back the wedding a month so we didn't ride the expenses on the credit card for 30 days, but we had to get married before moving internationally! I don't mind at all and I think that's what credit cards are for: those temporary need-a-bit-of-extra-cash moments.

Hmm, well technically we have enough in savings to have paid for the whole thing, but we are not touching our savings. No way, no how. Not happening. We had also just put a large down payment on our house 6 months ago or so, so right now we don't have anything saved for the wedding, but we booked our venue 12 months in advance and we're making payments on everything and to all vendors until it's all paid off just before the wedding. Every month I'm sending about $850 to our venue and then I'm also paying off one vendor each month until the bills dwindle down.

It will feel nice to not have any credit card debt from the wedding and I'm sure we'll also feel a lot richer having that extra $1000-1500 a month back in our pockets after the wedding! (Atleast I hope so)

FYI - I do put most of the payments on my credit card so I can rake in the rewards, but I pay it off every month. Just wanted to throw that out there incase any of you are writing out checks to vendors that may accept credit cards. With all these expenses it's a great way to rack up credit card rewards (so long as you pay it right off).

We had $0 saved for the wedding. We paid for things throughout our planning as we could afford them.

Whe we got engaged I had been building savings anyway and had about $3K. My granparents gave us $5K to add to that and the others are contributing about $8K. Mom is helping where she can and dad is out of the picture. We've been saving our little booties off in the mean time while we've been engaged, so I hope we'll have something left in our accounts by the time the wedding and honeymoon are over.

We got engaged August 2008. Amt. in my bank: maybe $100 Amt. in FI's bank: $0 (he spent it all on my ring)...Total wedding money: $100

Now (11/09) 15 months later...We have about $12,000 saved. We need about $15K more for our wedding and honeymoon so we really need to save a lot more.

I was shocked at how much I was capable of saving when I really put my mind to it! 12K in a year is a wicked lot!!

We saved......$0 dollars. Once we got engaged in 05/2008, we planned for a long engagement. We focused on paying my FI's credit card bills. That took about a year. Since then, we've taken what we would have paid the creditors and saved it. Now we're almost done saving for the budget which is $10k with no help from our parents.

Once you get into the mindset of saving, I think it's easy but that's just me.

@chicagobride: i'm not engaged yet but i was in school earlier this year and will get the tax credits plus the write offs for starting my new business plus daycare expenses plus the court reporting machine i was paying for... and m gets all of his write offs for his new business so um yeah i will be joining you in filing ASAP!! the only thing is if i get a huge amount of cash i may be more willing to pay off my suv than to put it towards a wedding... sigh... i guess i'll have to see how much i'll get back first and then decide. and of course have him propose :D

After we got engaged I looked at the money I anticipated having in my savings by the end of August when I stopped working and went off to law school. I earmarked about 10K for the wedding from that, with another 5K times 2 coming from each set of our parents. The rest goes to tuition and living expenses in law school.

I wound up having more than I thought, because my tax refund this year is going to be grrrrreat between the hope or tuition credit and major overpaying in federal taxes. Is it January yet?? Is it?? I'm filing on the first day I can.

We started saving seriously sometime around the new year of this year which gave us about 9 months. We got a good amount back in income taxes plus what we were able to save was a bout $18,000 + the $12,000 from my parents. We spent every dime of it and don't have a bit of regret!!
