Michael's/Walmart/Joann's all have printable invites that are fairly inexpensive and identical to what you will buy in a catalog (say Carlson Craft, etc). You can design your own and have them printed at Office Max or Staples for a fraction of the price that Kinkos will charge.

I see this post is really old but I still have some suggestions:

We used http://www.nextdayflyers.com/printing/ for our post card save the dates and they turned out Amazing! Super easy to use, quick turn around, very reasonably priced, friendly service! Check them out.

For our invites we used paper source and did then our selfs...they turned out very nice as well.

diy... they cost me around $270. most of the cost was the supplies. for the insert cards... i didnt use cardstock like most people would suggest. i used artist bristol board which cost about $7 for 20 sheets ($28). i used black cardstock for envelopes ($8) so i had to shop around for white paint pens ($10) to get the addresses to show up. i made a "pocket" to put the insert cards into ($15) and used ribbon and paper ties ($25) plus i purchased a white ink pad 2 stamps: one to decorate the envelope and one for address ($20). cutting supplies ($30). Then about $60 bucks on postage and about $80 on printing because i dont own a laser printer or know anyone who had one. Oh yea and the sticky dot stuff to seal the envelope.. cant remember the cost off the top of my head.

if you decide to go this route, get help.. it took me about 8 months to make them all (75 invitations) since i made the design in photoshop, did all the cutting, tying, stamping, and the most time consuming and the tasks i hated the most were making the envelopes and cutting out the cards. It honestly took me about 30 mins to do only one invitation. but you can easily cut your costs by using cheaper materials and using tools that you or friends already have (didnt really have that option). but i can say that my invitations look so goregous and professional that people doubted that i made them by hand (then i point out the pencil marks i forgot to erase off of the envelopes after they were cut out).

Try LCI online. I got my invitation, envelopes, stamps, seals, and thank you cards/envelopes/stamps/seals, for less than 100. But I also didn't want very fancy ones!

So far I would recommend http://www.zazzle.com/ (more specifically http://www.zazzle.com/wedding+invitations )
I haven't ordered my invites yet, as there is still over two years until my wedding. However, FI and I have spent A LOT of time playing around with the invites on zazzle. They are IN STYLE (for the most part) and easily customized. You have about five paper options, and often paper color options, font options, you can move some stuff around the card, a lot of the time you can delete elements that don't appeal to you, the invites comes with envelopes, many of the designers have coordinating RSVP and thank you cards. The best part is that it is CHEAP (generally less than two bucks per invite) and you save when you order in bulk, often up to 50%!!! I'm obviously a huge huge fan. The only bad thing about them is that I don't think that they send samples =/

I did my invitations with products from Paper Source http://www.paper-source.com/

I did an invitation making class with my MoH which was $10 and we got 10% off everything in the store, plus the class gave lots of great tips and tricks. I did these totally DIY but they didn't take too long and they came out great (we bought paper and stamped it ourselves to line all the envelopes, then we got embossing powder and embossed designs on the invites and response cards). I got everything for under $175.

I was going to use a basic kit from Michael's or Target and then snaz it up with some nice stamps, but that would have been almost as expensive and a lot of them have too much detail on their own to really change much. (but some of them are very nice as is).

I also used mypunchbowl.com to send electronic save the dates, since I figured I would rather spend the money to have nice invites or better flowers or something. They turned out very well and were totally free.
