@MSMAMABEAR: we're >>here<< i don't get it etiher about why folks insist on being married in a church. i think ja bride said it best, she's getting married where Jesus taught, under the great blue sky :D (or something like that)

@nicloop: it's not a religious thing, i think it's done a lot in africa, the yoruba tribe is what i may remember, but i'm researching i'll get some info back on it...

eta, it was the yoruba tribe.

wow i have never heard of the testing thing. and i have never been to a wedding where the couple jumps the broom, but i have heard of this. does this pertain to particular religions, like smashing the wine glass in jewish ceremonies?

I never wanted to do the broom, but then somone suggested a family member making theirs, then I thought my great grandma could make mine. But she is really sick, so she couldn't. So that idea is back out.

I don't plan to get married in a church. I'm a Christian, but I hate being inside.LOL I LOVE outside. I DON'T understand people who never go to church who get married in a church though. Oh,well. To each their own!

I am afraid to jump the broom because I always imagine myself falling. I like the tasting idea. I have never seen that before.

@crebre80: I know!!! I think we found one place to have one of the receptions so that is a little bit of a relief. And you're right, I do need to look into some Indian wedding planning to really see some of the important cultural elements for the wedding and the reception. That will be my next on my wedding to do list.

@meelabeela: i would definitely get on that!!! and if you book this year you'd be booking at 2009 rates!! most places raise their rates at the beginning of the year (vendors as well) if you're incorporating a lot of Indian fare in, I would definitely check with his mom to see if she wants to incorporate some things from India. I know a lot of Indian things like fabrics are flown in. I would also perhaps get with someone familiar with planning the Indian weddings!

We don't have a date set yet. We've been looking at a bunch of places and we're leaning towards July 31/August 1. Just have to finalize the location. Hopefully, that will happen soon. I'm scared that all the places that we LOVE won't have the dates available if we wait too much longer.
