I know this is a bit late and an older post, but my F has decided to wear a women's suit and a mens shirt. She tried on several men's jackets but all of them looked funny, gave her a linebacker look (she is 5'1). She was afraid a women's jacket would look "girly" but after trying on several, we both realized that most of them looked just like menswear but without crazy huge shoulders.

Question, what is the difference between a conservative woman's suit and a man's suit tailored for a woman?

I have a suit from Banana Republic in grey that's... well it's exactly like a man's suit except a good fit for women. There are no ruffles or silliness. It's my favorite suit, it and another black one, there's nothing like simplicity and severeness to give confidence but I feel like I'm missing something in these discussions.

So You're Engayged has a number of blog entries that have been written by brides looking to buy suits as well - maybe some of their experiences can help to guide yours? Or offer a starting point?

http://www.soyoureengayged.com/?s=suits&submit=Search

and Ariel over at OffBeat Bride has written at least one article of 'guidelines' to buying suits for women:

http://offbeatbride.com/2009/07/butch-wedding-suits

What size are you (and what body type)? I'm smaller (5'4) and pretty much straight up and down. For my body type, I find that the Hilfiger stores, JCrew's suits (mostly - some of their jackets aren't padded well), and Charles Tyrwhitt tends to have great fit. Otherwise, Brooks Brothers has lovely quality stuff, but you may want to take it in a bit - they tend to be slightly boxier.

And it's always possible to get a man's suit tailored to a woman's body. Depending on your figures, JCrew has some great mens suits that are a more slim cut and can be easier to tailor.

I don't really know, but check out Miss Stripes recent post - she did a couple about the awesome menswear-inspired womens wear that she was contemplating, here and here. I know she's in LA, but her ultimate choices are available online.
