There are a few things you should ask yourself before buying a camera.  Do you want a point and shoot or something more advanced like an SLR?  Do you anticipate taking fast action shots?  You may need to play with a few cameras and see how they capture moving objects.  How many megapixels do you really need?  It's great to have a 10 megapixel camera, but do you ned it?  How much zoom do you need?  You may want to research optical versus digital zoom for this one. The Lumix does a little better job with lighting sometimes, but the pictures from the Nikon turn out better overall. The Nikon is really user friendly and the pictures are AMAZING! You definitely want to get the highest megapixels that you can - higher number = crisper image! And my battery last forever! I think the newest models to come out actually have the touch screen feature available. Mine has been pretty durable as FI has dropped it hard several times and the camera generally lives in my purse pocket and gets banged around quite a bit. I'm in love with it, but oh heck it's so heavy and doesn't fit in anything smaller than a small suitcase! Canon has some GREAT point and shoots, and my brother has a Luminex by Panasonic (I think) and it is FANTASTIC! Some of his pictures come out better than mine! I really like it. It's pretty compact and super easy to use. Plus, the pictures are amazing. I bought my FI a DSLR last year (the Nikon D60) which is also amazing but I don't think you will be looking for a DSLR for your first camera.
