I've had a few Canon point and shoots and haven't had any problems with them. Huge fan of Canon in general because the battery life is great. FI is a huge fan of Sony and bought me a Sony SLR. Can't complain but I don't think I know enough about SLR to provide a real critique.

There are a few things you should ask yourself before buying a camera. Do you want a point and shoot or something more advanced like an SLR? Do you anticipate taking fast action shots? You may need to play with a few cameras and see how they capture moving objects. How many megapixels do you really need? It's great to have a 10 megapixel camera, but do you ned it? How much zoom do you need? You may want to research optical versus digital zoom for this one.

Hope that helps. Have fun choosing a new toy.

Thanks!!! I'm pricing out some right now! It's funny looking on websites, though because nobody seems to like their camera.

Well... we have a Nikon Coolpix (and my mom does too!) and my sis and best friend have a Lumix... both take AMAZING pictures. The Lumix does a little better job with lighting sometimes, but the pictures from the Nikon turn out better overall. I don't really know how to describe it!

I have a Canon SLR which I dearly love but as many posters have said it is just not practical for daily use so I also have a Nikon coolpix which is fantastic! The Nikon is really user friendly and the pictures are AMAZING! You definitely want to get the highest megapixels that you can - higher number = crisper image! And my battery last forever! I think the newest models to come out actually have the touch screen feature available. Mine has been pretty durable as FI has dropped it hard several times and the camera generally lives in my purse pocket and gets banged around quite a bit. I have had bad experiences with cameras that just take AA batteries because I feel like I never have enough battery time and I am constantly searching the house to find batteries.

Canon SLR... I'm in love with it, but oh heck it's so heavy and doesn't fit in anything smaller than a small suitcase! Canon has some GREAT point and shoots, and my brother has a Luminex by Panasonic (I think) and it is FANTASTIC! Some of his pictures come out better than mine!

I'm a professional photographer (photojournalist), and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3K is the best point and shoot that I've come across. It's small, fast, and takes great pictures. The battery life is great and is holds up really well in low light without having to use a flash. Nice nice camera.

My sister has a little red kodak, but it sometimes has issues with the battery. Any camera experts that can tell me what to look for, or if there's anything that should keep me from getting a certain camera?

I have a Panasonic Lumix dmc-tz4. I really like it. It's pretty compact and super easy to use. Plus, the pictures are amazing. I bought my FI a DSLR last year (the Nikon D60) which is also amazing but I don't think you will be looking for a DSLR for your first camera.
