zippeylef said it well- I think that if something does look "dated," -who cares? That makes it fun and seem cool.

I agree with bluespurrs. If you actually do a vintage wedding, there is NOTHING dated about it, because those styles repeat. However, a big trend right now is etsy stuff. I think that if you do something you love, that's what matters. Anything classic and classy will hold up to time.

Actually I would think the opposite would be true. Vintage styles repeat, over and over. I think it is today's modern styles we will be laughing at in 20 years.

I totally agree with the "Who the hell cares" sect. Everything becomes dated at some point in time. In 30-40 years, our kids are going to look at our wedding pictures and go "WTF?" just like we do at pictures of wedding from the 70s or 80s. I mean, pickup dresses, birdcage veils, bunting, fake mustaches, candy buffets.... are these things really timeless? Nope.

All I care about is that my wedding is a reflection of who I am. I guess you can classify me as a "vintage" bride, we're doing 1950s. The way to personalize these things is to give tham a twist. Yes, we're going for a retro/50s feel, but we're doing vampy, rockabilly 50s, not debutante ball 50s. We're going to have fun and our wedding is going to be US. I dont give a crap beyond that.

It's the same thing I tell people about my tattoos.... yes, in 50 years they will be saggy and misshapen and look like crap, but I dont care. I only care that I was true to myself.

When the vintage look first started appearing, people were just using a few vintage details. They were pretty and noticeable because they were unique. As it was seen more often, it seems like people started going farther and farther into the trend. Instead of a few vintage details, the ENTIRE wedding was styled in a vintage way-to me that looks more like a stage set than a modern, vintage style wedding. At that point I think it stops looking like personal style.

There is also a segment of the vintage look which has emerged which I find odd at weddings-the vintage/childish look. The whole circus/bunting/ fake moustache thing. I know people are trying to say " we're so silly-we can have fun" but I think that will look as dated as Princess Di's puffy sleeves.

Agreed that everything is going to look dated to some extent, but it's not always in a bad way! I mean, your 80s weddings with the HUGE poufy sleeves ... oy. I mean, look at Princess Diana's dress ... would any of you be caught dead in that today? But my mother's wedding in the 50s, while clearly from its era, still looks wonderful. Ditto Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly. Some styles are just more timeless than others, and even though they might date from a particular era, they look good regardless.

I went for as classic a look as possible with mine ... simple, clean, elegant. It might look dated in a few years, but hopefully not in a "What was I thinking?" kind of way. :-)

I've only skimmed the comments but thought it was a very interesting thought. I think it would be a really fun shower game or maybe day after brunch game with guests to say--what will be the most dated thing from their wedding. And then open it in 15, 20 years, how fun would that be?!

In my opinion, What is wrong with being dated in a decade or two? As an architect, that is what defines a building or space, it defines time, movement, and life. The beauty of a wedding is that it reflects who you are in that exact moment in time, because it only happens once to most. I think we should do what we feel is right to us without regaurd to what others think. That is where we get into trouble... mimicking what others are doing just because its there. We need to put our hearts into it, that is the way to ensure we will love our wedding in years to come.

I agree, there are photos that are obviously from long ago where I think everyone looks amazing - and photos from long ago where it's all "what the hell?!?"

I hope my wedding fits into the first category, and I think as long as you pick things that look good and you feel comfortable in it will - but who knows?

I don't think anyone minds that someone can tell what decade it is (as with Jackie) - it's just no one wants to be in the puffy sleeves and look ridiculous.

Agree that colors and themes are the most likely to look silly. We're having splashes of orange... :)

@cheerful: I hear color schemes are trendy too. Aparently the Tiffany blue and read and green and purple are 2009-2010 trends. I am just doing what I like and forgetting about it.
