I'm currently working with my friend who is designing our Save the Dates, with hopes to get them out by the end of this year. We've told many people via word of mouth, and are having an engagement party in December, so I'm hoping that'll spread the word of the date too.
We probably won't mention that it's Columbus Day weekend on the Save the Dates, but may mention it on our wedding website. But, we are also having a morning wedding, so people'll be ready to go home by 3pm, and can easily get home with time to go to work, if they don't have off.
We just did ours - http://diy.weddingbee.com/topic/diy-coaster-save-the-dates - and we are trying to hand deliver them because they are heavy! Our goal is to get them out by Christmas. (We knocked out most of them at our engagement party.)
We didn't say what day it is - we figure that when guests put it on their calendar, they'll figure out that it is the Sunday of Columbus day weekend.
I just got our STD's in about a week ago. We still have to solidify the top two tiers of our guest list (we're sending invitations out in tiers and are only sending STD's to the top 2. Most of tier 3 is essentially a back up list that will get invited based on regrets from the first two waves of invitations), but my goal is to have the STD's out by mid-November. I want people to get them before they have the chance to get caught up and lost with Christmas cards and such. We'll also mention that it's Columbus Day weekend on our wedding website, which people will be directed to from our STD's, but we're not making mention of the holiday on the card itself.
Hey girls, I was just curious if you had a lot of out of town guests? I hadn't planned on sending out my STD's until about 4-6 months before. Now that I see you guys are sending yours in the next month or so, it's making me nervous. Ahhhh...wedding planning...so much fun!! :)
A lot of our guests are coming from out of town - so we wanted to make sure they got them early, and we were seeing a lot of people at the engagement party and our coasters would have cost almost a dollar apiece to mail, so it made sense to get a jump on it.
Don't sweat it - 6 months is fine! (4 months seems a little "why bother?" since you get the invite like, 2 mos later.)
@stacie83 we have a fair amount of out-of-town guests. we also figured we'd get them out early since it is on a Sunday. giving people plenty of notice will provide them the opportunity to make arrangements to take off work the next day if they so choose or to make childcare arrangements since we're essentially having an adult-only reception. I don't think it's a problem to send them out 6 months prior at all.
Whew! Ok! I panicked last night and called my mom saying that we needed to go out this weekend to get STD's, lol! She was like "What in the world are you talking about?" :)
Planning on sending mine in January 2010, since most will be out of town. I want to make sure they have plenty of time to plan and budget with this economy.
Cute coasters @edb!
hm... i'm going to a magnet probably you know the kind you stick on fridges but i haven't really started on that, since i have been waiting for my engagement pictures to come in before that. ^_^
We're going with a postcard - my sister/designer is in the process of designing the actual card and we are printing on our Gocco.
We are putting the wedding date and our website on the STD, but the website mentions that it's a Sunday.
I'm pretty sure that the front will just have our monogram and a border...
The back will say:
Save the Date
Querida and her Mister are getting married
Website
**and maybe a little personal something or other... not sure...
We're planning to send them out mid-January.
I'm planning on sending mine out January 2010. I ordered them already because I don't want to stress about them over the holidays, so I'll probably package them up so they're ready to go.
The main reason is the hotel block, which is causing me stress. Our wedding is during peak leaf season in Massachusetts, and the hotel sells out 6 months in advance. We're hoping the guests will book from the block early in the year, and we'll know if we need to increase the block or not. We can't reserve the whole hotel because we're responsible for 50% of the rooms we block (meaning: we have to pay for them if they don't get booked).
I think 6 months is fine to send them out. Most of our guests already know about the date anyways, so we just want to send out the hotel info to go along with it. It's definitely not required!
my wedding is 10/3/2010...with many out of town guests i wanted to give them ample time to book hotels, etc. Our wedding is in NH during peak leaf season and those leaf peepers could potentially be a problem! I already sent out our Save the dates a few weeks ago...I wanted to get them out before the holidays. I think if you get them out in January you will be fine...and they definitely do not have to be anything elaborate...I made mine and just included the date, location and our website. Mine is on a Sunday as well and on the std I put "Sunday, October 3rd, 2010".
I'm also planning to send them out in January 2010. I'm a Columbus Day weekend bride (actually, a Columbus Day bride) so I want to make sure those who need to take our wedding day off from work have plenty of notice! Though, through word of mouth, everyone's aware of the date anyway.
We have the 10-10-10 date set in our minds, but we don't know if we'll still be able to get a venue for that date, hopefully! But I had no idea that the 11th was Columbus Day, bonus! Thanks Soon2bMrsWheeler!
My STDs will be out in December, doubling as Holiday cards.
That will give us time to ensure that all details of location are worked out (while we have a place, we're anticipating some potential complications in the next month).
If we did a 10/10/10 wedding, we'd have to include something like this in our std:
(from their album, 10, which is one of the best albums ever)
or
this..and the movie about the perfect "10"
or
this..if you're a fan of this college sports conference!
You could even have all three on this postcard and say "What do these have in common with our wedding?" Answer: 10-10-10!

So how are you doing your std? When are you sending them? Also are you going to put a reminder that even though its on a Sunday, Monday is Columbus day?
