These all bother me too!!! I do the definitely spelling error alll the time.
That same one was posted about a year ago and I have been looking for it. Would you mind putting up a link to where you found it please?
This is not where I found it but it's the original source (you know with all the SOPA thing people gets scared, lol):
One of my biggest pet peeves is wrong spelling lol! Especially alot and lose/loose. They should have this posted up in every English class!
Can I add that if you live in Canada, you should stop spelling like an American?! So many people here spell words like "cheque" "check" or "colour" "color" and even pronounce words like foyer (foi-ay) like foyer (foi-er). GAH! We have so little that belongs to us, we need to keep it going on :)
Look for the original!
The image was so big it looked small here and you couldn't read it so I cropped it in little images. The original has 2 more words I didn't put cause I don't understand
. lol
I honeslt ywondered what the hell you were all on about when I kept reading 'check'...I was like, what are they checking? Then I caught on that's how American's spell cheque!
One of my american students also had no idea was tarmac was! You call it something different.....can't remember what though!!
I love that thing! I saw it like a year ago or so and I seriously wanted to print it and scatter it throughout town. I HATE when people misspell words/use the wrong form of a word.
@Coffee cup: Thanks! The Oatmeal, thats right. I knew there was a web site that they all came from, but I could not find that old thread. Thanks! My step son loves those for over his desk for his papers.
@takemyhand: Or, if you're American, stop spelling things like a Canadian! That drives me nuts! I knew a few people from high school who did that and I couldn't stand it.
@Coffee cup: I agree that Effect/Affect is hard to remember.
What don't you understand about "definitely"? Lots of people spell it "definAtely," which is wrong. I think that's all the comic was saying.
@Lemma: What I meant is that I havent seen those misspelled, ever! Thankfully I think.
Another one I find some people just ignore is the difference between this a these. Some people just use "this" for everything.
@takemyhand: @CarolinaCola: This doesn't bother me either way. If I spell "colour" as "color," nobody is going to pause for even a second in confusion. Both are correct, there's really no need to be pedantic about regional differences.
The ones that really bother me are the homophones that people mix up. It really does make me stop and try to puzzle out your meaning if you've used the wrong homophone.
Oh, and I can't help but picture a mind floating freely away every time I see something saying "I'm loosing my mind!"
@takemyhand: I used colour all the time but since MS Word corrects it I started to think I was just dumb and started spelling it color. Didn't know that's the canadian spelling.
I'm usually really good at spelling/proper usage but the one word that I just can't get right is receive. I spell it as recieve constantly and it drives me insane because every other word like that (ex. weird) I spell right. Gahhhh.
@dcdt212: There's a little rule to help remember how to spell words like receive. It's "i before e, except after c, or words that say eh as in neighbour and weigh."
There are a ton of exceptions to this rule (for example: weird), but maybe it'll help with receive.
You wouldn't believe the amount of people on my facebook that spell "tomorrow" wrong and spell it "tomarrow", I am not the spelling police because I make my fair share of mistakes but that one really bothers me.
All that gets to me too. I can't tell you how many times I want to rip my hair out when someone uses "your" for "you're". Gah! Get it right!
@CarolinaCola: I've seen people do that as well. If you're American you don't need to put a "u" in color or neighbor.
I read a lot of books written by Canadian/British authors growing up and always thought color/colour etc. were interchangeable - I liked the extra 'u' better (it sounds more correct) and began to integrate it into my writing. Cue high school when I had several teachers give me a downsized letter grade for spelling words in a way they deemed as incorrect. Wtf, seriously? It's not like I'm using anything that could be confusing or change the meaning - I'm adding an extra vowel. Arg.
Unfortunately, my job as a copywriter for an American retailer has pretty much bled all alternative spellings out of my brain.
@Lemma: Thanks, I know the rule and I still mess it up (although I had never heard that last line!)! It's seriously the only word like that, too. lol I think my brain is just making sure I'm paying attention sometimes.
@dcdt212: I think the last line is an attempt to make the rule a bit better. I've heard that there are more exceptions to the "i before e, except after c" part than there are words that follow the rule!
@Lemma: We learned that same phrase in school, but with one more addition on the end.
There's a little rule to help remember how to spell words like receive. It's "i before e, except after c, or words that say eh as in neighbour and weigh; but sometimes it's weird." (Get it, weird? hah)
I'm a huge spelling freak but I type really fast and when I realize I misspell words I freak out. Some that particularly bug me: tomarrow for tomorrow; when people confuse advice and advise (əd-ˈvīz), I don't mind that color/colour favorite/favourite is on here (this is a worldwide site, and I always forgive ESL mistakes as I meet many people from different countries in my line of work (I am a nanny- I know a lot of Au pairs)
I do, however, always forget who/whom.
I use gray over grey which according to http://www.greyorgray.com/ is the American way but a lot of people here splell it grey, grey seems likes warmer shade to me whereas I think of gray being a cooler color (weird, I know..).
I get peeved over facebook illiteracy as well, like sumtimes for sometimes, you changed the o to a u and dropped the e, what? Is it that hard to spell correctly? Or gurl for girl- same # of letters! I just saw a high schooler spell definitely "deffiantly" which is basically "defiantly" - way different meaning... Ahhh! Spelling and grammar are not important on fb apparently.
@Lemma: Thanks, I'm glad you saw the irony in it ;-)
Buahahaha that's hilarious. "Do we have to name them all?" "I'm looking for the ones I'm looking for" and dang that guy loves the word "celing" lmao.
I get really confused when people are highly educated but still make major spelling and grammar mistakes. I think, "Spell check has really helped you out, hasn't it?" I think computers are ruining the academic world buy correcting misspelled words automatically they don't allow a person to learn from their mistakes.
Love this thread. These spelling/usage errors drive me insane. Is another possible Canadian-UK vs. American spelling issue "gray" vs. "grey"? I personally like it better with an "e" but have been corrected a few times on it.
The one that bothers me the most is when people say 'wander' when what they meant was 'wonder.' Gah it gets me everytime. =p
For the US verse UK/Canadian/Aussie/Euro spelling I am split down the middle. After just moving back to the States from living abroad for a few years I had finally started to get the hang of (and like) the other spelling. Now we're back here and I don't want people to think I can't spell but I also am used to the other spelling now and I can't figure out why America is the only english speaking country not using it. So I switch back and forth. Hahaha
Hahah..Love the signs with the rules. Wish I could use them in my 1st grade classroom...might actually help them remember the rules better than our curriculum does! I admit to being a terrible speller and will often open up word just to spell check a word before I write a note or fill out a form. I constantly spell decide wrong...like every time..even just know I had to correct it. As for the american vs. canadian spelling I am a little annoyed each time I see a u in a word that is not "usually" there, but I quickly get over it.

I found this fun and true. We all make mistakes (specially those of us who're not native english speakers) but sometimes these mistakes get out of control.
