@GJGR:  for invitations I would buy a groupon for Vistaprint. It shouldnt cost you more than $20.

For the photographer and DJ and even your cake, try talking to friends/family members that may have a passion for those things. Or talk to your local college, most seniors/juniors would be more then willing to take photos or dj or bake your cake for less then half of what a professional would charge. I know in our case I have a friend who is majoring in Sound Tech for Theater who is doing the DJing/music for our ceremony and reception as a wedding gift, I have another handful of friends who are in school for photography or art who have offered to do the photography for free and my MOH and I are planning on making the cake. We are saving ridiculous amounts of money just by talking to talented friends and family members.

OMG you can do this!! I’m doing it.

First….set a budget. It’s so important.

I found a country club and worked to negotiate away site fees and a lower per person rate that included taxes and gratuity. The other places I worked with were restaurants. I believe there is a Maggiano’s in NYC? I hear they have great options. I only looked at places that 1) I could do ceremony on site 2) had chairs already 3) had linens already and 4) did food on site. They are much more in control of their costs so have more room to work with you.

Consider an off day like a Friday or Sunday when they would not normally have this extra income.

Skip favors.

I got my invites (and they are beautiful) at Michael’s with a 50% coupon that you can print online. So I spend $25 on 30. There are kits that have 40 in it. I printed them myself.

I am paying minimal for my videographer. I got a $300 package. It’s raw footage but I have the rights to it and I get all of it. I can also pay to have it edited at a later date by my videographer.

I am using a pro photographer friend of mine for photos, he hadn’t done a ton of weddings before but he’s done some and I loved them and I was very confident after our engagement session.

Flowers – I am doing minimal flowers. Search for centerpieces off season and buy them on clearence. I’ve seen people use old books, cool vases from michaels with baby’s breath or a few flowers sticking out (seriously looked elegant), I’ve purchased different sands from michael’s on clearence that i’ve used for centerpieces else where and I have poured it into a vase and put candles in it…
