I've mentioned this here a couple times, but I was previously engaged and broke the wedding off 3 days prior to the event. In turn, I was left with a boat load of wedding "stuff" that I've kept stored away.
I have boxes and boxes of unused votives, vases, ribbon, thank-you cards, etc. I'd like to get as much use out of these things in my NEW wedding coming up in July. The only problem is that my other wedding was going to be bright pink and green, and this one will be black and yellow (damask bride here!)
Anyway, I want to use the white vases if I can. They are shorter, about 6 or 7 inches tall, with a 5 inch opening. I believe they are ceramic, and I've been checking into re-painting them black. Does anyone have any experience painting over fired ceramic? I think I may have to sand it down first with a fine grit sandpaper, but I'm not sure what kind of paint to use. I'm not worried about the longevity of the paint-job, since I'll only need it for one day.
Any tips or advice? I'm really trying to salvage whatever I can in order to save money...
I can't help personally but I know that if you go to a Home Depot (or something similar) and bring in one of them as an example they are very helpful and know how to "fix" anything - even that!
@ elle - Thanks for that link! I knew I had seen that wedding bio before but couldn't find it for the life of me. Also, I like your suggestion about leaving them white, but I'm using a black and white damask runner and really want the vases to stand out. plus, it isn't a BRIGHT white, it's a little "dirty vintage" white...
they used a technique where the glaze was thinned out so that the sharper edges of the vase still show the clay color underneath a tiny bit. it sort of gives it a "country" look.
@HumarockBride - I was thinking about that too, or taking it to a craft store. Thanks! :)
Wintersprincess, I was just at Home Depot this wknd looking for black spray paint, and they had one that was made for use on glass. Not what I was looking for so I can't comment on how well it works...but it should do the trick for your vases, especially if they only need to make it through the night. I've also seen spray-on primer, which would make your job a lot easier. Like HumarockBride suggested, ask the people at Home Depot -- they're almost always very knowledgeable about that stuff.
