Sending Save the Dates around the holidays

posted 1 year ago in Beehive

our wedding is next june & we're planning on sending Save the Dates out soon.  one thing we hadn't considered is the upcoming holidays.  is it better to get the info out sooner but risk it getting lost in the holiday craziness... or wait until jan 1st to send them out?   has anyone tried a combo holiday card & save the date?

I've been wondering about this, too.  Our wedding is in May, and we haven't sent our STDs (we're shooting for this week).

I wouldn't think it was too big of a deal.  At least you'd have a chance to talk with people during the holiday gatherings, and maybe people are more on the look out (and keeping better track?) of getting things in the mail for the holidays.

Our wedding in the end of next May and we are sending out joint save the date & holiday cards. I cant tell you how well it worked out since they haven't gone out yet but I am hoping they will.

We too just ran into this dilemma.  I figured I worked so hard on our save the dates, I'm sending them out after the holidays so they won't get lost in a pile with all the christmas cards everyone receives.  Sending them out after the holidays is plenty of heads up time for you.

We're in this exact same situation. I decided to send ours out after the New Year. That way people will have their new calendar out and ready to "save the date"! I just don't want the Save the Dates to get lost in the shuffle during the busy Holiday season. Our wedding is at the very end of June, though, so we've got a little more time than some of the May brides.

We got married in May, and sent our STDs with last year's holiday cards. They were just a simple postcard format, so we inserted them in the cards themselves. It saved time, paper and money!

We're getting married in June as well. We were concerned about the holiday craziness so we made sure to send ours out a little early. I actually just dropped off my last batch of STDs today. This may sound shallow, but we know some of our guests (more family than friends) will be buying us gifts for the holidays. I'd rather them check out our website and have them linked to our registries to find us something we really want instead of buying us a generic holiday gift that'll get shoved in the back corner of a cabinet/closet.

I actually think its a good time to send them out!  I think most people look forward to opening their holiday cards/mail and this would be another fun surprise for them.  I know i pay much more careful attention to mail around the holidays because I look forward to getting cards, and of course we keep them all out until after the holidays...so a save the date in the mix would be fab.

I also agree with MissMandy in that if you send them out BEFORE the holidays, you will have more of a chance to talk about your wedding with your family and friends that you only get to see around the holidays.  They will most likely bring your STDs up in conversation, giving YOU the chance to get a better idea of your guestlist... (as in, you'll probably be able to find out who highly plans on coming, or who already has a previous engagement on your wedding date)

We are sending ours w/ the holiday cards (hopefully).  We are just sending about 75/125 to people we are inviting.

***Thanks Miss Mandy for meeting up with me for the magnet sheets!

My wedding is April and I sent them out today....I kept meaning to send them out earlier, but somehow (???) I kept forgetting them!  I think they say 6-9 months before, but if you don't have a lot of out-of-towners, 4-5 months is okay.  But, send them out whenever!  I don't think people will misplace them or anything.  and like someone said, maybe you'll get some good gifts for the holidays!

Aww, your welcome, Reilabird! ;)  It was great meeting you.  We must stay in touch! <3

But I see the points about the holiday cards and whatnot.  I think it can go either way.  The suggestion of others checking out the registery during the holidays is great!  You can get exactly what you want for Christmas *and* your wedding.

Bonus!

We're (ok, I'm) planning on sending our STD with our Christmas cards. We're an August wedding but we have a lot of out of towners so we're trying to get the word out as soon as possible to allow people to make travel plans.

And I'm not going to lie. I tend to procrastinate, and there's NO WAY I'm going to send out both STDs and Christmas cards. I'd love to do so, but one of them just won't make it out. I know myself. :)

Why not send them out the first week of January and include a message like "now that we're in 2008, save the date, we're getting married this year!"

we did the same thing.  our wedding was in sept. and we sent save the dates in early january right after new year's.  i think they would have gotten overlooked in the holiday card shuffle.

Beekeebear - I love this idea!

Thanks for all the advice!  I knew I wouldnt be the only one wondering about this :)  I think we'll probably end up waiting until jan 1, mostly so we can work on them the week between christmas & new yrs when things are less crazy.

Oh another idea we brainstormed was handing them out at our holiday functions... but we had to veto b/c a few of the people there won't be invited to the wedding due to size restrictions... don't want any hard feelings.. (another reason not to have it fresh in people's minds during the holidays)

Since it is the technology-age, we sent our reminder emails to everyone months before, and actually didn't send out our STD's until about February for a 7/7/07 wedding.  It was not a surprise to anyone especially since the date was a holiday/most popular day probably in a long long time, so there were no surprises when the STDs came out.
