I wanted to provide my guests with a link/account to upload the photos they take at our wedding. I've a little bit about smugmug and flickr.
I was wondering if any of you can provide feedback on the two sites. Flickr is about 25, smugumug is abou 40...i'm wondering if smugmug is that much better? i want it to be easy for guests to upload their photos and also be able to download the photos to their own computer if they like them, and possibly purchase them for a reasonable price.
I can't compare the two because I've never used Flickr, but I've had as smugmug account for a few years and I love it. It's very easy to arrange pictures, add captions, etc. People who visit the site can leave comments on pictures as well. I really like that I don't have to 'invite' people to view the albums, I can just send them a link or put a link on my website. If you want to see a personal smugmug album, PM me and I can send you a link.
I'm not sure about smug mug, but flickr let's guests download full resolution photos- that's what sold it for us! that way they have the choice of where to print them, if they want.
I've used SmugMug for years for my personal photos and love it, but for the wedding we chose a Flickr account because we thought more people would be familiar with it. In the end I think either would be fine and I think SmugMug is a lot nicer for the longer term if you plan to change the password and take over the account for yourself after the wedding.
To encourage our guests to post photos we printed up little clear labels with upload instructions and attached them to the backs of our little tent placecards. We also put instructions on our wedding website and made sure friends and family knew about the site.
We were amazed at how many pictures our guests posted. They really got into posting their own and viewing others so we ended up with 500+ photos, many of them really good.
I also used Flickr, but the one drawback about it is that when you want to download all the pictures your guests have uploaded you have to download a third party program to do so. Flickr does not enable you to download multiple pictures at the same time. So far we have about 800 pictures on our Flickr page. There is no way we can take the time to download each individual photo. If you go with Flickr and end up wanting to download a batch of photos, you can find several free programs by googling "flickr batch download".
Also, my husband and I just bought a Mac. If you happen to have a Mac, you should buy mobileme. It's more expensive than flickr or smugmug, but that's because you can do mulitple things with it (including backing up your entire computer). Anyway, in the gallery feature you can create separate access to different galleries. So, you can make a gallery for your wedding and guests can log in from there and upload photos. They can also download them at full resolution. It also allows visitors to order prints, photo books, etc. I wish I had a Mac before the wedding. I so would have done this instead.
