I’m not a baker but I baked our wedding cake and I would say ALWAYS use dowels if you are in doubt. It can’t hurt. I actually made the mistake of using straws and it almost ruined my cake, which I think was smaller than what you’re making.

@Natakie16: Yeah, they were too weak the day of the wedding even though when I did a trial run the month before they were fine. One of the straws bent and it made the cake the tiniest bit lop sided. Thank you for the compliment!
