I am currently waiting to be proposed to. We picked out the ring and I went with a round cut in a pave band but princess was a very close second. I am trying to decide if I made the right choice..... and I LOVE looking at rings.
Anyone with around a 1ct round or 1ct princess care to post pics or hand shots of your ring? I would really appreciate it and I am sure others would love to see your ring(s)!
Well technically we're not engaged yet but I do have a picture of the ring on my finger. We picked it out together and it's been "hiding" in our house for the last week, uggggh! Here is a pic of my Princess Cut solitaire- It's a little bigger than a carat and my ring size is 4.25
My vote is for round! I know princess cut is very "in" and they are beautiful. But IMO nothings beats classic.
I have a princess cut and I love it. However, I do think that round diamonds appear larger than princess cut, just because of the shape (just in case that's something that would affect your choice). Do you have pictures of the rings you're looking at?
I have a five-stone ring, it has a 1 ct Princess cut center diamond and two smaller brilliant cut diamons on each side. I LOVE IT. I didn't want to have anything to do with the ring and the selection, but he wanted to know what cut I was partial to, so I told him round or princess, but mostly princess. He incorporated the best of both worlds into the ring. Everybody's a little different though- you can choose to be happy with anything!
I don't have a picture of my ring on this computer but I have a round cut diamond that is just over 1ct and I LOVE it!
FYI - Round diamonds have more visible sparkle than princess cut stones and a 1ct round diamond will appear larger than a 1ct princess cut diamond, in case either of those things would effect your choice!
I have a round center stone with channel set princess cut diamonds, and I LOVE the classic look of the round stone! Plus, who doesn't like a little extra sparkle? :) I also don't have a pic on this computer but I found an old thread where I had posted a pic of my ring (see Comment #3 on that thread)...the center round diamond is a 3/4 ct and the band is 2.9 mm wide, but it gives you an idea!
Thanks ladies for the input!
I originally went with the round because of the sparkle factor! And I have heard before that rounds do "face up" larger than princesses.
I will try to post a link to my ring... not sure if it will work.
Not the greatest representation... you can click on the shapes above the setting to get an idea of round/princess.

@ella86: I had a look and I like the round stone better than the princess...but again, I may be biased because I love round stones! Gorgeous ring!
I <3 round stones! Princess cuts are beautiful too but I feel that rounds are more classic and they do have more sparkle and face up bigger.
Thats a 1.4 ct princess cut total weight of 1.85 I believe...and I LOVE it! :-)
My ering is round with square halo. My husband picked it out and I think he did a wonderful job! I guess he tried the setting with both types of stones and like the round better...but because of the setting it has a squarish appearance.
I personally like the round better. It just has such a beautiful sparkle! I think you made the right choice!
Sorry, these pics aren't very good...but they give a general idea
I have a 1ct round cut e-ring with a pave band. I love it! I love the way that the round cut stone looks on my band.
Alright this is a test to see if I can insert a pic of my ring....

Thanks everyone for posting.
MsCubs is your ring around 1ct (you don't have to tell me the actual carat wt)? It looks a lot larger.
Mine 1.1 ct ring...

And I have tons of pictures of it here: http://irunyourun.wordpress.com/2010/05/27/wedding-talk-my-rings/
My ring is from JamesAllen.com
@ella86: Technically I guess it's closer to 2 cts-- It's about 1.8cts. We lowered the color to G and the clarity to SI1 in exchange for a larger stone. Truly it's my setting that makes the stone look bigger- It's very thin and delicate behind the diamond which makes the center stone appear large.
I have princess, and love it. I'm big on stru
cture and lines though, so I'm very square not circle. I'd even have square tables if round weren't free and square more expensive...
The most important thing to note is that pricess cuts are cheaper but you can get away with a much lower grade color in a round than a princess cut.
Ex. My SIL 1.5ct round H colored diamond looks beyond amazing. A 1.5ct princess color H is less expensive however you can really see the color difference. Colors hide on corners that is why a round diamond is called a brilliant because of the way it gives off light.
Just be careful because you can notice the flaws in a princess cut 10x more than you can in a round. However if your FI can afford a near perfect stone then I like princess cuts much better (I may be a little partial since that is what I have lol)
All else being equal (cut, quality, color, clarity), rounds are much sparklier (if that's a word)!!! That's why I decided to go with a round. Even though my ring is 1 ct, it sparkles so much more than my friends who have different shapes which are bigger. I've had people walk across a room and tell me that they noticed my ring sparkling out of the corner of their eye.
It always makes me beam just as bright!!
CanAm Bride- I really couldn't decide between the two so sparkle was my deciding factor. The hard part was the princess' sparkled like crazy too. I had never seen other stores carry princess cuts that sparkled like that so when I saw them I was so confused lol. I also went with the round because they appear larger than princess is most cases.
I love everyone's rings. I could stare at rings all day.
I have a 1.25 ct princess in platinum! I LOVE MINE! So classic and elegent :) timeless.

mine has a 1ct round center stone...if you check out one of my first blog posts you can see it there :)
My vote is also round! I'm partial though b/c I have a round. Sparkle factor, nothing beats a round brilliant cut diamond! Princess cuts are also very beautiful, bit if you're going for sparkle, round is the way to go!
Here is a picture of my 1 ct. center stone round...
@ella86 - You have to be very careful when looking at rings in a jewelry store. 99% of the center stone in the settings are not real diamonds, they are CZ. Make sure you ask to see a real diamond in the setting you want. You will most likely find that a princess cut CZ that the jewelry store puts in their settings for show purposes has more sparkle than the real stone. It will make a big difference.
This obviously isn't a picture of the set on me, but it is the exact same set that I got...and I super love it :)

CanAm- I did see that at the mall stores they put CZ in their settings (the sales people told us) which I thought was surprising. At the jewler where we actually purchased my ring they just have empty settings in the case. Then, they ask you your budget/shape of diamond you are looking for and they would bring out diamonds from the back for you to look at with the loop and compare.
heres my "precious" - 1.16 princess brilliant cut:

I love my round so much! It's about 1.2ct and my finger size is a 5 if that helps :)
I worked at a jewelry store, and I have NEVER heard of any stores displaying CZ in their rings. A reputable jeweler will NOT have a CZ set in setting which they are selling as diamonds. At the store I worked at, all the stones were authentic diamonds and there was not a single man-made diamond in the store. Also, a quality real diamond will always sparkle mor than a CZ.
Loribeth- they weren't trying to sell the CZ as diamonds. I agree though, I don't know why they did that. Maybe thats why all those mall stores went out of business!
I think they may have done that because they didn't carry many stones in the store to place in an empty setting. I think if you wanted to do that and you had something in mind they would have to order in some stones. One of the reasons I didn't get my ring from the mall. Plus, those stones didn't look as nice, were waay overpriced for what you were getting, and the warranty wasn't great.
But in their defense, no they weren't trying to pass the CZ's off as diamonds. That would have been real bad LOL.
Yes, @ella86, that is exactly what I meant. If a jewelry store carried real diamonds in every setting they had on display, they would most likely have millions of dollars worth of inventory sitting on the floor, which would not be ideal. I would say 99% will either have settings with no center stones, or they have CZ's set just so you can get an idea of what they look like with a stone in them. They should be more than willing to pop out the CZ and put in a diamond to show you a true look.
I would go princess cut all the way!!! Its just my opinion i don't like round cut i've aways wanted princess.
Here is my 1.01 princess cute stone:)
