August 13th is fast-approaching and we finally decided on our plans for the first anniversary. We wanted to do something really special but we don't have much money. The decision is......the zoo!!!! It's 3 hours from our house and not too expensive for our modest budget, plus we are so cute around animals....we LOVE animals. It is the perfect date for us and we've never been there!
Phew.
What's everyone else doing?
We used our tax refund to book a week vacay at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica in Cabo. We will be going 2 weeks before our anniversary because hubs can't get our anniversary week off work. I'm not sure what we're doing on our actual anniv. day.
horray for your tax refund! (totally jealous...I owed 1000 bucks this year...boo)
We are planning a trip to Charleston and Myrtle Beach at the end of September and I'm super pumped about it =) We're from Tennessee so it's not that far for us to travel & Myrtle beach is really cheap that time of year... Charleston is always expensive from what I can tell (we've never been to either) but I hear that it's a lot like Savannah and we LOVED Savannah.
So we'll probably spend a couple of days in Charleston and then go to Myrtle beach to offset some of the cost of the trip =)
Ours is next weekend. Hard to believe it's already been a year!! We got a gift certificate for bedandbreakfast.com for our wedding and we are using that to go away next weekend. We found a great place about 45 minutes away and close to our favorite beach.
@WiLLowTreE: oooh I LOVE Myrtle Beach!!! Always went there as a kid and teen. My favourite memories there: mini-golf on every corner, crablegs at every restaurant, and definitely swimming in the ocean.....I used to always use a 'body board' to ride the waves...I could do it all day long. Maybe one day my hubbie and I will go there too!
@bradybride: congrats! That sounds dreamy! And what a great idea for a wedding present that was!
We plan on going back to the bed and breakfast we got married in. We will be staying for two nights. It's in St. Augustine, FL, so there are tons of things to do. We love it there.
@cvbee: mmmm I love crab legs! From what I understand there's a new place called Broadway at the Boardwalk or something like that and it has tons of restaurants and entertainment that we are looking forward to exploring. Hopefully we enjoy it!
The tentative plan is to go to the spa/hotel where we spent our wedding night and stay for the weekend. We're going to have massages, etc, and I'd like to ask their restaurant to pack us a picnic lunch so we can go to our venue (next door) for a picnic on the grounds :) I also wanted to have a 1st anniversary shoot but DH wasn't going for it, so he compromised to having a shoot there either when we're pregnant or have our first. Yay! He's not as big on the photography as I am so I'll take what I can get, LOL!
We went on a Mediterranean cruise, but there were no good itineraries right ON our anniversary, so we went 3 weeks early. On the actual day we went for dinner and to a play.
@missfroggy: great idea! we'll for sure have to do that another year...our B&B is in our town, but is super special to us...maybe we'll do it one year when we want to have a kid-free night....down the road when we have kids
@bakerella: ncie try with the first anniversary shoot.....I can't believe it's almost been a year....honestly feels like yesterday! I love the idea of using a key wedding photo spot for the pregnancy/baby pics. I'd love to do that!
We are not doing anything, maybe buying a bottle of champagne on the way home from work. Unfortunately we have commitments that weekend and unable to get away. Also, we are really broke so doing something that will cost us is out of the option.
So im hoping just a nice picnic. :)
Our 1st anniversary will be bitter sweet. DH's job is causing huim to relocate Sept. 1 (it's a promotion so we're excited about it) but I can't follow until early spring. Our anniversary is 3 weeks after we begin living seperately so we have booked a hotel mid way between us for a weekend of relaxation. Somehow I hope to find a cake similar to what we had on our wedding to eat on our anniversary since we were unable to save our top layer.
Ours is next week as well. We are leaving the monday after our anniversary for a week in the Bahamas! I can't wait! I need a vacation!
That sounds like so much fun, I love the zoo!
We stayed for a weekend at a B&B near where we got married. We couldn't stay at the actual B&B we got married at b/c they're not dog friendly and we wanted to bring our pup. There was a huge dog rescue event going on that weekend, and we went to the dog beach. It was a blast!
We were planning on dinner at the restaurant where we got married. I was planning on getting a cake (we already ate the top tier) and having it decorated similar to our cake (but I found another design that I loved, so I'm thinking of doing that instead). But our April trip to Japan was cancelled due to the earthquake. So it looks like we are rescheduling the trip over our anniversary. I'm hoping to get some pictures of us in traditional Japanese wedding attire.
@bakerella: I was disappointed that we didn't get e-pics done. DH is like yours, hates getting pictures taken. But recently he *finally* realize just how disappointed I was (I tried to not make a big deal about it) and said we could get post wedding pics done. But I've gained 20 lbs since the wedding (I call them happiness pounds) and there is no way I'm getting in front of the camera right now! :-) So I think I will play that card to get some pregnancy or newborn baby pics.
We will be traveling through Asia for 6 months starting September 1st, so we will be in an ancient Chinese town for our first anniversary!
We're going back to the spot I was proposed to. After that we are having dinner at the same restaurant we went to the night we got engaged. I plan on buying a short white dress so I can feel bridal again as well. I'm looking forward to sitting back and reflecting on these past two years from engagement to our 1 year anniversary and everything in between. It's been quite a journey and I can't wait to celebrate!
We will probably both be working since it is Labor Day weekend. DH had to fight to get time off last year, so we will probably be celebrating on a different day.
It will probably be something simple like dinner and a movie, though. = )
@mmsva: Ya good point. I'm not nearly camera ready right now!!! I'm trying to get myself focussed on the idea of a bikini for our trip to Costa Rica in December. Eek!!
We're going to get a room in the hotel where we stayed on our honeymoon and just have a nice, relaxing evening. Also, I'm baking a mini-cake for us. :)
Wow! Loving all the responses on this thread! Loving all the different inspirations (honeymoon, proposal site, 1st date, etc). Keep em coming!
@WiLLowTreE: you are going to LOVE charleston :) just sayin. . . . It is my favorite place in the world
oh, and to answer the question, we are a long way off from our first anniversary, but we really want to take a week and head up to Maine for a week on the coast at a cozy B&B :)
we're going to london for a week :) we actually are going to have friends visiting (our bm and his \gf) on our actual anniversary, but then we fly out about 2 weeks later. we found a really good flight/hotel deal that we couldn't pass up!
Just a couple more months as of today for us! Because we got married in the private room of a restaurant, we can now go back there for every anniversary (until it shuts down I suppose!). I'm ordering the same thing: Scallops in creamy vodka sauce, new york strip and tiramisu.
The rest of the evening is rated XXX, lol
Oh and I plan to get him this, and frame it.
We were planning on going for a long weekend to Santa Fe/Alb for the Balloon Fiesta and this awesome train tour in the mountains... but my DH broke his wrist and all the physical therapy bills from that ate into our anniversary fund. :( So it'll just be dinner and cake this year. I'm hoping to be able to save and do another "big" trip back to Hawaii for our 5 year anniversary. Until then, nothing fancy unfortunately.
We splurged and went to california (from NC) for a friends wedding as well as an anniversary trip to yosemite. it was awesome but no more big trips for a few years!
We never got to take a real honeymoon after our wedding, so we're taking our belated honeymoon combined with our 1-year anniversary. We're going to the big island of Hawaii for a full week and staying in a fancy resort. We're both so burnt out from work right now that we really need the vacation. I can't wait!
We took an early anniversary trip to Kauai, Hawaii for 10 days - got back on July 4. On the actual anniversary (8/7), my DH is planning something special for the two of us - probably dinner.
Happy anniversary, ladies!
We're heading up to the Niagara Wine Region in Canada for a quick overnight trip.
We're doing this tour of a vineyard with a sommelier where they teach you how the wine is made. A picnic lunch on the vineyard and a personalized bottle to take home. Overnight stay at their guest cottage right on the vineyard!
I got a kick ass deal on Living Social!
And we're going to dinner at this restaurant I've been dying to try which happens to be 20 mins away from the cottage. It's Farm to Table cuisine and we got a gift card as a wedding gift.
So it'll be a pretty nice but cheap weekend thanks to awesome deals and wedding guests! :)
I was just in St Augustine over July 4th week. My ILs rented a beach house on Crescent Beach. So beautiful! St Augustine's a cute little town!
DH is taking me to NYC for 5 days! I am so excited because I've never been. We haven't really gone anywhere this year, so it will be a nice break from work for us.
@ktisthatbees: if you have any suggestions on places to stay/stuff to do in charleston let me know! I am very open to suggestions.

@Gerbera: Tell me more about your wine tour. It's about 4 hours drive for us to get to wine country, and it is on our to-do list with a couple-friend of ours.
Here ya go! http://www.rootstocks.ca/
It sounds pretty awesome to me but I'll let you know how it goes after our anniversary. :)
Have you been to the region before? I LOVE the Niagara Wine Region. Some fave wineries of mine:
Jackson Triggs for their facilities, awesome outdoor amphitheater, plan a barrel room tour if you can,. Or you can walk in but they are only set times. Their wine is so so.
Inniskillin just because of how big they have gotten. We still remember their barn days when their Pinot was $20 (now $100+). Hate their new tasting room.
Marynissen is a tiny hut of a winery but has good wine.
Chateau De Charmes has my brother's favorite Ice Wine.
Confession here.. I shed a few tears on our 1st anniv.
So we still haven't get our wedding video, so that's a bummer to start off anniversary with.
We can't go away anywhere due to budget/work/time etc. So we finally decided to go to a carnival in a near-by burbs and it's free! Carnival listing website says it has a craft fair so we went because in the past we had been to carnival and we enjoy looking at different things people make (I would say I enjoy that a little more than he does). Turns out there's no craft fair, just carnival stuff which we enjoy looking at ppl playing. that part was so-so.
For dinner, I look up a place near by because we don't know that suburb well. Originally I saw a fine dining that ppl raved about on yelp but hub thinks it's too expensive ($40 an entree). So I found another bar n grill that has a coupon.
Turns out it's a like a neighborhood diner. I really couldn't back the tear about the disappointment. I would rather go to chain restaurants like outback rather than going to those old diner place.
I feel so bad for tearing up, but that's what I did. Worse of all, I chose that place. (hub isn't good at planning stuff, so I kinda accepted that and took over the planning)
Sigh.
-I do know that what matter is the person I am with but at that moment, I was just so disappointed at the moment. it's ok...for being silly.. right? =)
@dada: Don't feel too bad - that happened on our mini-moon. We went to a nice little resort town near where we live for a long weekend. And could not find a fine dining restaurant to save our life! We had a couple options that we found online, and when we got there, they were either closed or a sports bar. I just about cried.
DH is planning our one year - I just got back to my desk and had an email asking if I could get the Friday off of work. Apparently he's planning to recreate the day we met (which will be hilarious) and the rest he's keeping a secret. So we'll see!
