Okay my venue had us do our tasting a few days ago and we were really happy with the food. We chose 2 plates, each with a different veggie and starch – because they looked best together and flowed together, taste wise.
After picking it that way, the event staff corrdinator (who was sitting with us the whole time…lol) suddenly remembered that we coulnd’t have a different starch and veggie on each plate – it had to be the same.
She explained that it would take the kitchen staff too long if they had to put rice and veggie medley on one plate and roasted reds and green beans on another.
Well, blame it on the wine we had with lunch, but we all walked away "ok" with the thought and just delt with it.
Today – I’m really ticked off about it. I mean honestly, these are highly trained kitchen personel in a 4 star country club. You’re telling me if my guests have one thing with chicken and another with fish it will add so much time to the plating of it that it’s not possible?
I’m considering e-mailing and discussing this with the event gal there who’s in the the pastbeen really helpful and nice about everything.
Does this seem right to you? Is your venue doing the same thing for you? Love your feedback on this one. Thanks!

Our country club gave us free reign, but I don’t know if that’s true everywhere else. They let us have any veggies and starch we wanted for either plate. In fact, when my fiance asked about something that wasn’t an option, the head chef came out to discuss it with us and made up another alternative on the spot.

We are having out reception at a Fairmont Hotel and they are only offering the choice of veggies and 1 type of starch. But we are able to offer 5 meal choices to our guests at no additional charge… which is what made me happy!
It wouldn’t hurt to ask and see if they will allow it. But I don’t think it’s unreasonable not to offer it. If you really do want a choice of more than 1 you may have to consider going somewhere else…

At our venue, each entree choice comes with a different starch and veggie. That is normal – just read the menu at any restaurant. If you had a half dozen different choices it might get confusing, but come on… the beef goes on the plate with the potatoes, the salmon on the plate with the rice. Its not hard. Although our venue (also a country club) was really accomodating. We wanted to switch sauces, combine choices from the winter and spring menu, and asked for appetizers that aren’t actually on the catering menu. They had no problem with any of that. And we are paying $35 a head plus alcohol. I love our country club, but they already know that.
I would call them back and discuss the issue. Just say that after thinking about it, you really want what you first selected. And see what they can do, because its not unreasonable.

It’s neither "right" nor "wrong" … it just is.

Our site does different sides with each dish, but every site is different. Certainly feel free to ask, but I wouldn’t push. If their standard rule of thumb is to keep the same starch and veggies for both meal options, you may upset kitchen staff by making things more complicated than usual for them. While it may not seem like an unreasonable request, one thing I would not want at my wedding is frustrated kitchen staff.

I guess I’m feeling even more on the edge now because my In Laws who picked up the tab at the tasting (which I feel should have been incoprorated in the outstanding prices somewhere…not an additional charge) are upset because, we we’re caharged 20% gratuity for no service. We have a waiter come drop off pre-arranged food and leave. And thats it. I don’t find that to be worth $80 in tip!
Not only that we didn’t get full meals, coulnd’t take home leftovers..they e-mailed her and all she did was refer them to the policy and procedures manual which I find a bit tacky for a 4 star country club. It’s a "blowing you off" answer and I don’t think that the treatment we’ve been getting, which has been really personalized and up to date should change now because suddenly the wedding is getting closer. I think they attention needed to detail should get greater, you know?
SO I can only imagine what they are going to say about the starch and veggie. All in all, until it matters this place was worth it, I’m not feeling that so much now and I don’t know if I’d reccomend it to anyone either….not for the price and what you get….
Anyway…thats the update….
