& I'm getting 1 of them for my husband for his birthday :).

A lady in the next town over found a box in the middle of the road full of 20 kittens :(. They were obviously left for dead, but all were ok! I'm going to bring husband with me on Fri & he can pick from about 10 kittens (she found homes for the other 10 already). He doesn't know this yet so I'm so excited for his suprise!

Only catch is, his bday isn't for another 2 weeks, so I'm wondering if I should wait & get him a kitten later? I could get one from my local pound (its "kitten season" there) & give him a kitten on his actual bday. I've been on petfinder.com on all my breaks & I can't decide...

So cute!  I think getting a kitten from anywhere would be a good idea, just make sure that you spay/neuter it, so you don't have to worry about giving away more kittens later!

I say take him this weekend.  I am a true believe that pets choose you.  If it's meant to be, your kitten will be there.  It really doesn't matter if it's FI actual birthday.  It's the gift of love that counts.  Thanks for choosing a rescue.

I voted box kitten because if homes aren't found for them, they'll go to the shelter anyway. Usually kittens at the shelter will find homes - it's the adults that they have trouble finding homes for (since everyone wants a kitten). So yeah. Box kitten. Mr. MJ and I planned to get a kitten from a shelter, but when my friend found one in her garage we took him instead because it was convenient (and he'd have gone to the shelter anyway!).

2 box kittens! We got our 2 cats at the same time and they just love eachother, I wouldn't want either of them to be in a 1 cat household since they are so social! Kudos to you for saving a kittens life!!

okok box kitties win! I told her we might take 2, I want them to bond with my dog too, I'm sure we'll decide on the spot. Taking care of 1 is almost the same as 2, usually. If I get 2 do you think they'll bond only with each other? Or do you think that my dog will share the love too?

    Yay!!

I think they will bond with each other but will also bond with your dog. What I've found with cats is that the older they get the less likely they will be to bond with a new kitten/new animals; kittens are made for bonding!

What kind of dog do you have?

It really depends on their personalities.  Go the seperated room acclamation route.  Keep the kittens in a closed off room for a week or two before letting get free roam of your place.  Bring your dog's toys/bedding in to them so they can get the scent.   Do short supervised visits after a week.  Don't get discouraged if it takes a while for them to accept each other.  It usually takes a couple of months, at least.  Just keep the "safe" room if they get overwhelmed.

We have 6 cats and they all get along very well (knock on wood).  We haven't had any major fights between them, and I attribute that to slowly introducing them when a new cat comes in.

I have a dalmatian :). She loves cats but usually scares them cuz she's so playful. We'll do our best to introduce them slowly.

Hmm... now I'm wondering if I should tell my DH we're getting a kitten. We just talked about this 2 days ago & he said he really wants one & thinks we should get one. I fooled him by saying I don't want a cat in the house. Should I tell him before we leave to the other town? Should I tell him tonight, or should I just take him to a random place & say suprise, pick a kitty! hmmm...

I vote 2 kitties! Just make sure you have the money for vet bills. 2 cats is no more work than 1 (we have 2 cats and 1 dog fyi)... but it is double the vet bills. spay/neuter x 2, shots x 2, checkups x 2, random illnesses x 2... you get the idea :)

You girls are the best :). I'm so excited to suprise him with a box kitty! I just emailed her letting her know we could come up tomorrow. Its DH's days off Thur & Fri so he'd have 2 full days of kitten bonding time.

Yea didn't even think about doubling the vet bills. I need to know going into this cause DH will want all he can have! haha :)

I second the idea of getting box 2 kittens!  It's hilarious watching them play together, and in my own experience, they're more likely to accept future pets in your home as well.  I loved having two kittens at once!  I'm not sure if it'll help them get along with your dog, but if it doesn't, at least they'll have eachother.  :)

    Dang it...now I want 2 box kittens...

Oh, i vote for double kitten love. I have two myself and they play with each other. I FIRMLY believe the costs in vet bills (not that much after the neutering and ringworm we had an issue with) breaks even with the costs of replacing furniture that ONE destructive, lonely kitten would get his paws on. With two, they tear fur out of each other when they play, but at least it's not my couch =]

oh i heart deh kittehs. My warm my little heart =]

(Vet bills wise, mine just had their yearly vaxes and stuff--they're 3....and they were each about $100 and about $70 for a box of Revolution).

Now I realllly want 2!! I'll let DH decide what he wants.

She found homes for 10 of them within 5 days, that's pretty good! Plus, I'm takin 1 or 2, so she'll have about 8 left. Still, that's a lot of kittens!

DH says he's really confused about what we're going out of town for that we can't get here. I told him we have to go tomorrow so they don't run out of it. He's usually REALLY good about knowing what I'm up to, but not this time. I'm not lying, we can't get them here, no where in this town can you get kitties that were found 20 in a box & I want him to be able to choose from as many as possible. I win! :)

I would get two.  We have two shelter kitties, and even though they aren't related, they're very attached now.

It has taken four years for them to "put up with" the dog.  He still tries to play with them, and they still don't like it.  But sometimes they'll come up and give him a kiss, which is adorable.  And he protects them from outsiders, LOL.

I think maybe you should prep your DH.  Like take him to Petsmart to help you pick out kitten stuff (like a food bowl, food storage, collar, etc), then bring him home to the new kittens.  Part of the fun of a new pet is the shopping!

Yea, we're going to go kitten shopping together after we get the kitty :). My plan is to take DH out of town, get the kitten, then go to our pet supply store together on our way home. Then, I'll have to go back to work for a few hours so he can bond & set up kitty stuff while i'm gone. Plus, my dog goes to work with me, so we won't have to worry about introductions just yet! :)

I have a shelter kitty. They were doing a drive at the mall and he was there, not exactly the youngest of the bunch, and I fell in love! We've been besties for almost three years. He does have issues when other kitties try to come over, however we got a border collie last year and I've discovered he's a dog lover. They play together, fight together, and give each other kisses before bedtime.

Congrats on the new baby/babies! Be careful when bringing them around your dog.

Thanks! I'm more scared for my dog than the kitties. Should they attack her, she will run. I brought her to my mom's house one day & one of her cats hissed & spat at her, she jumped on the furniture & tables & ran away. We'll see how it all goes tomorrow! Most cats eventually warm up to her thou :)

2 Kitties!  Our cats are always more mellow when there are two (provided they are brought up that way.)  My parents initially intended to do farm cats, but they ended up as pets.  All but two came in near-pairs (three instances of one cat shows up or gets taken home, and then another randomly shows up).  Of those two, one bonded with our dogs. and one ran off the moment we let her outside.

My current cats - our male, Mycroft, is spastic.  We cat-sat for about six weeks, and he was so much more mellow.  The other kitty left, and he went back to waking me up every twenty minutes.  So we got Viola, almost his female double (except he's cuddly, and she wants one half hour of cuddling twice a week - and that's quite enough for her, thank you.  He's also trainable, and she's more normal in that regard.)  Their games might wake me, but it isn't Mycroft crawling all over me and chewing my hair at all hours.

I leave in 2 hours. I think I'm more excited than DH! He's actually still really confused, he's trying to think of something electronical. He's gonna be totally caught off guard :)! Found out that she has kittens that are still being bottle fed & older ones. Considering we have a dog, probly best to go with the older ones.

I adopted my third kitten in July--my oldest is 2.5 yr and my other is 11 mo!  She acts timid but really, she's a spitfire...she'll shred facial tissue, toilet paper, and paper towel.  I've had to put all of that stuff high up.  They are expensive--but I love them and they're my hobby!  Some people buy new purses, shoes, etc...I maintain my three loving cats :)

@serabell:  Well my oldest cat, Tux, has special needs and has asthma so she just avoids contact with the other two.  Occasionally she'll playfully stalk Cisco (the youngest).  My middle cat, Firefox, is very playful and vocal--they play a lot, wrestle.  Unfortunately, she can play a little rough so I have to tell her to go in her kennel as punishment.  Overall they've acclimated within a few weeks.  I was very worried at first b/c Firefox hissed from the other side of my bedroom door where Cisco was in for about a week.  I occasionally see the cats sleep near each other which is pretty cute!

My biggest recommendation is to get multiple litterboxes--3 for two cats.  They create domed litterboxes with a little flap on the front.  I don't get those b/c Tux can't get in.  Also, Cisco pees high so I had to go and purchase brand new high side litterboxes b/c she kept peeing over the edge so keep that in mind.  Also beware, your dog may try to sniff around and even eat some of the cat's excrement in the litterboxes.

As for vet stuff, make sure your new kittens get dewormed.  Cisco was supposedly dewormed when I bought her from Petsmart through an animal shelter, luckily I caught it soon and my vet had to deworm her again.

So cute! I totally want one now. Good for you guys for adopting a rescue cat (or two).

I adopted my second cat from a shelter when my other one was 1. It's been 2.5 years now and unfortunately they never took to each other. They just play fight once in a while and act annoyed by each other. I still think they have some sort of cameraderia though because they'll usually sleep in the same room, although they take great care not to touch each other :)

Awful news (but treatable)... went to kittens, took 1, went to vet (kitty looked odd, patchy fur), & kitty has ringworm :(. Vet advised us not to keep the kitten cause its REALLY hard to deal with. 6 weeks of kitten isolation. Sulfer smelling dip. Contageous to other pets & to people. If we tried to take him to the shelter, they put down sick kitties.

The only plus is the vet saw us right away, so we didn't contaminate anything but our clothes & 3 towels. The vet gives free 1st time kitten exams, so there was no charge. The kitten has earmites & internal parasites also, which the vet tested for free & gave us a free trial thing that should fix it.

So what are we going to do?? Go back to the box cat lady & get a 2nd kitty from her cause all her kittens have it, including the other 9 she found homes for & they're contageous & in early stages. Figured if we treat our new kitten, its not too much more work & expense to help 1 more. DH & I decided 3 would be too many. So, cause of the ringworm we're getting 2 box kitties & starting treatment tomorrow.
