I think this is done fairly commonly, especaially as destination weddings are becoming more popular.  Some people do very formal affairs (I’ve heard of people wearing their wedding dress), but I think most people make it a less formal “come and celebrate because we got married” sort of party.    Ours will be low key, without things like cake cutting, ect.   If it is important to your mother that you do this, I would ask if she would be willing to take on the planning/paying role.
