I personally like the look of 3 stone rings much better when the center stone is larger, even if it's just by a little bit.
Some pictures:
Center stone bigger:

All 3 the same size (at least as much as I can tell):
:)
I personally think that 3 stone rings don't look like engagement rings unless the center stone is at least slightly larger
Here is mine! The center stone is 1 carat and i cant remember what the side ones are...there are also channel set diamonds on the side!
@dreaming-thanks!! I love it and I LOVE that the center stone is bigger! I would def go for a center stone that is bigger...but i am biased! ;) good luck!
Personally, I prefer a bigger stone in the middle and then two smaller stones on the side. Here's my ering!
Since your mother has offered up her 1 ct earrings, they would be great as the side stone (that is, if I'm reading them right, since earrings are described as a total weight; therefore, 1ct earrings means that each diamond is .5 ct. correct?). And then get the center to be 1ct. I think the one with the large center stone looks the best!
I have a three stone ring too! No pictures to post, but my center stone is larger than the side stones.
Good luck!
i love my 3 stone. the sides are smaller and also kind of lower than the center one.

I have a three stone princess cut engagement ring. Here is a pic from the side.

Mine is 1.1 in the center and sides are .7 tcw. I also have three little stones on each side of the center three, (for a total of 1.99). This is just wanted, so I just love it.
My center stone is bigger, which is exactly what I wanted and the look I prefer :)

All your rings are beautiful! Thanks for the help!
Part of the issue we're having is with cost. The outer stones are 1 ct each, meaning that the center would have to be even larger. Any ideas on how much a 1+ ct solitaire would cost? (Probably middle-of-the-road clarity, color, and cut)
I would love to have the center stone larger but am worried it might be too expensive!
Head over to www.pricescope.com and peruse the forums there. I agree with you that if you want your center stone larger (which I personally think is a lot prettier) you're either going to have to buy a 1.5+ ct stone, or decline your mother's offer :(
Also, by becoming a pricescope forum member, you get discounts from whiteflash, Brian Gavin Diamonds, Good Old Gold, and I think a few other reputable diamond sellers.
If there isn't a huge emotional connection to the earrings, for example, passed down for generations, maybe you could see if you could trade in the one carat stones for something a little smaller, and use the "credit" towards a center stone purchase. I have no idea if a vendor will do this, but I think if you were to talk to a customer service rep and tell them about your problem and let them know you want to buy the center stone from them, they'll be able to work something out. I know the three vendors I mentioned have good upgrade policies, so maybe they'd do a "downgrade" policy too. It's worth a shot.
P.S. A 1.5 ct, GIA certified, VS2, I color, Very Good cut (all of which are pretty middle-of-the-road) from whiteflash is $8700
Thanks for the info @Goldfish! They were my grandmother's diamonds, and she wanted for me to have them someday. So maybe we'll just use one of them for the center stone and get two smaller outside ones or look into a "downgrade" option!
A one carat center stone with a couple of .3-.5 side stones would be gorgeous. Then you can make a pretty pendant or bracelet with the other 1 ct!
I love the look of a large center stone and too much smaller ones on each side. If I were designing the ring for me to wear, I would use the 1 carat as a center stone, make the other one carat into a pendant, and have two delicate diamonds on each side of the center stone. So I guess I vote largest in center.
Goldfishpie- I should have read this post more carefully. I vote with your vote! Yay for pendants. Someday I will have one :)
I have one too and I love the center stone bigger than the 2 sides. Here's mine...

Umm.. 1 kt on each side seems like it might be a lot...may overwhelm the center stome...plus, I thought that the 3 stone rings were given more for anniversaries? I guess I am more of a classic solitare gal for the engagement ring, and if I were were given a set of diamond earrings I'd happily wear them in my lobes :)
Well, my vote is all 3 the same size, because mine is all 3 the same, with 4 smaller stones down each side. The difference between mine and most other three stones though is mine is not held in by prongs, but rather bars (Think tension but with a basket underneath) - it sounds weird, but its beautiful. I think it is a bit more unique when they are the same size because as you can see - most people have it with a larger centre stone.
@ms.zinnia - take a look at bellnga's ring if you want to see a 3 stone with 1 carat side stones- her ring is HUGE! (beautiful though!)
I have a three stone ring too. My center stone really stands out though because it's much larger than the sides and also a different shape. If you won't be able to afford a nice quality 1+ carat for the center I love the idea of using one of your grandmother's earrings as your center stone and the other as a pendant and then buying new side stones. A girlfriend of mine has a round center with pear sides.. absolutely stunning.
Here is mine.. center is 3 carat radiant and sides are each .5 trillions
I love mine. It is .75 center stone, and .50 side stones in a cathedral setting.
I have a three stone e-ring too! I absolutely adore the setting!
Here it is pictured with our wedding bands:

And here is a picture of just the e-ring so you can see the setting:
Here's mine. The centre diamond is a bit bigger than the others. Kind of hard to tell from the picture.
Have you considered using a different shape for the center stone instead of round? You could use a long pear or radiant cut with the 1 carat side stones and it would appear larger. Otherwise you're looking at somewhere around 8K for the center stone.
Also, you could check out craigslist or idonowidon't for "used" stones to save on cost and you could end up spending around 5K (here is a 1.58 center round for 5K plus the setting http://www.idonowidont.com/158-Carat-Engagement-Ring,name,70480,auction_id,Jewelry1000W,qid,,pid,1,pageno,auction_details) . Or put a big blue sapphire in the center (for now?) or a moissanite stone until you could afford the real deal.
a 1.9 ct for about 9K http://www.idonowidont.com/191ct-Solitaire-in-white-gold-F-color-Si2-EGL-cert-,name,54549,auction_id,auction_details
I love how you can see all of the diamonds, including the smaller shoulder stones!
Keep in mind, if you use the diamonds you have as side stones, you're going to have to match the color/quality in the center stone- it'll look funny to have near-flawless side stones (don't know if they are, but...) with a lower-quality center stone.
Here's my ring- not the best pic, but it gives you a size idea... My ring size is 4.75, the ring is 1 ct center stone and .5 side stones.

So my center stone would be your side stones. Not for nothing, but that's a BIG ring if your hand is small.
Can you use one of the stones for your ring, then another maybe as a pendant to wear on your wedding day?
I love my reset and redesigned ring! We used my fiance's grandmother's ring and had Philip Press revamp it. Center stone is 0.92 carats, total carat weight of the ring is 1.5 carats.

Hello Bees!
So, my FI and I are working on my engagement ring at the moment. My mother has offered to give us a pair of round diamond 1 ct earings. We are thinking of doing a three stone ring, all the diamonds the same size of 1 ct, or possibly getting a larger stone for the center stone. Any pictures of three stone e rings would help a ton! I have not been able to find many that I really like for inspriation!
Thanks!
