The boyfriend and I are wanting to go on an incredible vacation to celebrate my graduation from college in May 2015. We just aren’t quite sure where to go. We’ve never been out of the country, and I want to have an amazing experience. I am obsessed with marine life, so I would like to go somewhere where I can scuba dive and spend a few days in the water. However, I also want something a little “different” than what most people usually do, so I’m not terribly thrilled at the prospect of Paris or London. I am also a fan of nature and natural beauty.
I would like to do something for 2 or 3 weeks so that I have plenty of time to experience what that country has to offer (or at least some aspects of what it has to offer.) My budget would be around $2500-$3000 (perhaps a tad more), including airfare. We are located in Arizona.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Meglin: well, European destinations would probably be out anyway- because round trip airfare for 2 people would likely eat up most of your budget. How about Costa Rica? Or somewhere else in Latin America? Not sure what the airfare would run you, but it would likely be less than Europe and the expenses when you get there would be significantly less.

WestCoastV: Thanks for the recommendation! I assumed most of Europe would be out. Boyfriend is caught up in the idea of visiting Germany and Amsterdam, so that is still a possibility, though I’m not sure it’ll be quite the vacation I had in mind. Nothing wrong with that, however… as long as I visit an incredible place, I will happy!
I should also specify that my personal budget will be around $2500-$3000. He will be spending the same amount on himself. 🙂 So for two people, our combined budgets are around $6000.

Meglin: I recently went to Thailand for almost 3 weeks and it was amazing. We did it in 3 sections – Bangkok, the north, and the islands. You could always skip Bangkok if you don’t want a city, but it’s definitely worth seeing. In the north we went to an elephant sanctuary and took a boat ride to Laos, as well as visiting temples and hot springs and so much more. We only spent 3 days in the islands as it was the rainy season but the marine parks there are breathtaking (setting of The Beach) and there are lots of places to go snorkelling or diving.

Meglin: that changes everything! I thought it was $2500 for the 2 of you, inclusive of airfare. With the bigger budget, you’ll have lots of options!

I vote Thailand! With a trip to Cambodia, or maybe Vietnam. My husband and I got SCUBA certified in Koh Samui Thailand!
