@klhubb:

I remember that happening when I was in grade school. We often didn’t hand things in, the teacher would just walk around and generally look to see if it was done. Or sometime they wouldn’t look at all but they would ask students what they thought the answer was while discussing it in class.. so the expectation was that it was done at home.

Yes, I remember this.  Only certain worksheets were collected.

My brother’s teacher does the same thing! He’s in third grade, too!

I had to turn stuff in back in the day, I remember doing homework that was “graded” with like a check or check plus.  But I had to turn it in.

Yes, sometimes homework is collected at random. This was even done to me in grad school. Also, though, keep in mind that he may be saying that so that if he says it enough, the adults may just let the homework slide…

It’s possible they do peer checking.  Plus I’ve known kids to get conduct cuts when homework wasn’t done (but no grades).  The teachers find out because the kid can’t trade papers with anyone.

I’m a 5th grade Language Arts teacher, and I’ll be damned if I collect 60ish homework assignments on a daily basis!

I only collect their writing assignments.

All textbook or workbook assignments are checked to see that it was done, but gone over in class. My students are responsible for checking their homework.
