Here’s a little information for other bees out there who are having trouble deciding between 4 and 6 prongs. My heart is set on a moissyco ring (see earlier post) but I’m not sure how many prongs I want since I’ve never seen either style in person. So I bought a couple CZ rings off of amazon to compare. Here are the pictures.
Top two rings came as a set for $15.99 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007IPLTNM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00)
Bottom ring was by itself for $5.99 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0098SG64Y/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00)
So I decided that I like the look of the 4 prongs better. Here’s why: I like that you are able to see the sparkle of the stone from all angles. With the 6 prongs, I feel all you see is metal from the sides. However, the perks of the 6 prong are ofcourse the extra security, it shows off the roundness of the stone better, and it makes the stone look bigger (both CZs above are relatively the same size, but the 6 prong looks bigger to me). Definitely not an easy choice though. Bonus: Seeing these rings solidified my preference for sidestones over a plain band. 🙂
What do you think? Do you prefer 4 or 6? And (as always) feel free to post your ring porn!

@danielleinfl: those are cute rings 🙂 i have a 6 prong and i absolutely love it! it makes my ring look rounder as when the 4 prong does not. also though, not all 6 prongs (or 4 prongs) will look like that lol. mine is a 6 prong and it doesn’t look like that. my prongs are thinner and my ring sparkles like no other 😛

I love my 6 prong ring! Mainly because it shows how round the stone is and is more secure. My ring is from Moissaniteco.com!

I dont have my ring yet, but I like the 4 prong!! When we were looking at rings, all under a carat, the jeweler said this “when your ring is under a carat, the prongs are up to you. If youre doing something that will knock your stone loose in a 4 prong it will most likely also knock it loose in a 6 prong”…. and that sealed the deal for me 🙂 with the bigger stones the 6 prong does add more security, but I love the 4 prong look 🙂

OP, I’m sure that’s been helpful, but the prongs on that 6 prong ring are HUGE and not very attractive so your ring would not end up looking like that. The prongs would be much smaller and more attractive.

I have a 6 prong solitaire RHR and the stone is very visible from all angles.

@BlondeMissMolly: I agree, this is a $6 ring, so the quality is obviously not great. But I still worry because I plan on having a relatively small stone (0.75 or 6mm). I’m afraid of the prongs still looking somewhat crowded if you know what I mean. There’s just not a whole lot of room for them to space out, you know? I hope that makes sense.
@ofroyalty: @sleepyhead22: Beautiful rings! 🙂 What size are your center stones, if you don’t mind me asking?

@danielleinfl: thank you! mine is a 1.5ct 🙂

@danielleinfl: It’s totally a personal preference! I don’t like 4 prongs because I think it makes a round look square, and I think it makes the stone look smaller somehow. But if that’s what YOU like better, rock it (no pun intended)!

mine is a 6 prong and i love it. very bold and modern

I like 4 prong because it shows more of the stone, but consider a 6 prong for a larger stone just in case it becomes loose. Getting the CZ’s are a great idea, off to check out some CZs. There are a lot that are pretty identical to the Mossyco ones.

@danielleinfl: Thanks! Mine is also 1.5ct. 🙂

@danielleinfl: I’m pretty picky with solitaire settings. I prefer the 6 prong Tiffany setting (the genuine Tiffany from Tiffany’s… not all the similar ones). The prongs are delicate and very pretty.
I like some 4 prong settings too but I’d be worried that I’d lose the diamond or chip it more easily since it’s less secure.
