convertible dress?

posted 3 months ago in Beehive

Hoping for your help-Bees!

So all along when I pictured my wedding dress it would be a long, lean dress, a low-cut (but classic, and not sleazy) and curve hugging dress (in a good way).

But then, I tried on a poofy ballgown this weekend and fell in love.  But the realistic side of me knows that I would not want to wear that gown all night...

Have any of you Bees heard of (or know of any designers) that make convertible dresses (like you can take the tulle skirt off and it reveals a slinkier dress for the reception)?

I have not seen any dresses that purport to be convertible.  I did try on a couple of dresses that actually had a separate bodice and skirt, although for those dresses the bodice was boned, and so pretty structured (not slinky in any way).  If you had a two piece dress, you could have two separate skirts - one full and ball-gowny, and one less so.  I'm not sure what kind of bodice you are thinking would go with a slinky skirt and with a poofy skirt, and I'm having trouble thinking of one, but I would suggest that you look at two-piece dresses, and maybe think about a second dress for the reception.

OMG, I did the same thing!  At first I was dead set on a slinky number (since we are having a night wedding I thought I'd want it sexy.)  But then I went to try dresses on and fell in LOVE with a ballgown cuz I looked like a princess!  I didn't get it and then went back and forth on what I wanted, tried to find a convertible, but they all didn't work for me.  FINALLY, I found THE PERFECT dress and have my last fitting this Saturday!  Check it out, I highly recommend and think you'll love it!!!

Alfred Angelo makes a great convertable dress. It has a lace overlay over a satin sheath. The bottom of the sheath detaches to reveal a short lace hem. It is style <span class="bodycopy2">1774NT. You can see a photo on theknot. I believe I have also recently seen it for sale on craigslist.

thanks for sharing!  I keep going back and forth on poofy dress vs slinky dress... thank goodness I have over a year and a half to decide!

Carolina Herrera makes convertible dresses. They are really cool.

You might like the JSM1095 from Sottero and Midgley :)  It's curve hugging.  Go try it on, the pictures online doesn't do it justice at all!

I've heard there are dresses w/ detachable trains.  My friend bought one in David's Bridal years ago.

i have seen detachable trains in action on the catwalk at the unbridaled bridal show in philly in feb... and if i didnt have my dress already i would have one of those! i always joked i wanted a tearaway dress (long for ceremony short for party) so i think it's cool. they were designed by http://www.hennessymayd.com/  if you are in the philly area you should give them a call, i have been to the shop & the owner is really nice. basically they are all custom designs, so im sure you could take your idea to another seamstress in your area. otherwise you could always buy two dresses.

I don't know of a wedding gown that does that but I have seen a gorgeous Jim Hjelm bridesmaid dress that is convertable. I also heard that people now are starting to order bridesmaids dresses in white or ivory  and using them in place of a wedding gown. This is a great idea if you are on a budget. It might be something to consider if you like the dress enough!

I saw a Carolina Harrera dress in a magazine where the bottom zips off and the wedding gown then turns into a cute cocktail dress! I forget what magazine though because it was a while back... but it was super cute.
