Unconventional wedding dress?

posted 4 months ago in Beehive

After some long talks with the FI and my mother, it's been settled. We're going to have an outdoor wedding near my hometown.

Now I've started to think about wedding dresses and boy, am I conflicted! We're certainly going to have a non-traditional/very casual affair. I'm demanding that my FI wear chucks and a basic suit at most etc. Initially I wanted a 50s new-look vintage type gown ie:

It's cute ! Cheap (~$120)! And colorful! I'd get to wear a fun crinoline!

I'm reconsidering though after seeing dresses like these:

I love poofy skirts that reach somewhere between the knee and the ankle and I like the idea of doing a colored sash and crinoline or something, but I also wonder if I'll regret being too "bridal" with the all white dress. Even my mother said she couldn't picture me in traditional garb. But, with the other option, I'm worried about not being bridal enough! Gah!

Have any of you ladies gone with an entirely non-traditional wedding dress and not regretted it? Or did you do so and regret it?

Or, can you think of some other dresses that might fit my casual, but not too bridal criteria? Thanks!

i'm going rather non-traditional. i'm having my dress made it is two layers of fabric, the bottom layer is a silk back charmuese in silver (not super shiny silver, not dull gray) and the top layer is either going to be a chiffon or organza that is white with silver/sparkly threads in it (still have to find it).

the point is, it is your wedding and you can wear whatever you want, the best way to figure it out is to just try on as many different kinds of dresses as you can cuz you don't know what will work for  you and what wont till you put it on and you may just fall in love with something that you didn't think you would want.

I would go out and try things on.  I also started out looking for something definately not white - a nice, taffeta dress in pale pink, or maybe dove grey.  And I now have a beautiful vanilla-ice-cream colored wedding dress.  I totally fell in love with it.  I guess I thought I would feel or look kind of silly in something like that, but its gorgeous.  So I think you can't really tell until you have the dress on.  You can absolutely wear whatever you want, but I wouldn't rule out white without at least trying it.  Those short dresses are very cute!

It looks like you could have both! I checked out the Vivien of Holloway site and it looks like she has that retro dress style you love in White Satin which you could pair with a great red sash and red shoes or if plain white scares you the Green Rose Garden dress looks perfect for an outdoor wedding.

As far as looking not like yourself in white - I think the style and the accessories would make it personal and 'you'. Also, a white dress is intended to set you apart and symbolize that this is a special once once in a lifetime (hopefully) event.

They also have the same dress in white with red polka dots - which is super cute and still unique. I love the cut of that dress though!
