My FI and I did our budget the other day, after depositing TWO surprise cheques from family who decided they wanted to help with wedding costs, and we realized we are not in any wedding debt, and a third of our expenses have been paid already!
This includes: venue rental, my dress, a fair bit of decor, our flowers (we bought a voucher for a florist through weddingful.com) deposits to our officiant and our DJ, and our STDs.
Our dance fundraiser is this weekend, and we expect to make another $1000 or more, and our tax refunds will come in soon too, plus the money my Dad is contributing, so it looks like we’ll have paid for everything by the time the wedding happens! hooray!

@clover32512: ive been told canadians do things a little bit differently, they have parties where people pay toonies (sp?? their currency) and the money goes to the couple for wedding cost

@clover32512: YES! it’s true, in some parts of Canada fundraiser parties called Stag and Does or Jack and Jills happen, but not here in BC. my FI is from Ontario however, where they DO happen, and they typically make the couple anywhere from 5K – 10K!!!
you have to have a lot of family, friends, and support to raise that kind of money.
I’ve been throwing live events for ages, so we decided to throw a dance. Only our close friends knew we were raising money for our wedding, it was open to the public and all our friends invited their friends, and the hall was packed! people danced for hours! we performed a Burlesque routine, and it was awesome.
by the end of the night most people knew we were having a wedding this summer and everyone was so happy for us and supportive. in the end we made $1300! we are so happy.
i just got more great news too- my tax return is close to $1800! yay for being a broke student! lol!
so, at the risk of tooting my own horn here, we’ve almost already paid for our wedding, I can’t believe it! It felt a little risky when i first made up our (just under) 10K budget. It felt so LAVISH. (we are currently living on $2200 a month for everything.) Both my parents were concerned. but I had faith that we would save and raise the money somehow. and we did!!
(our 10K budget includes rings and honeymoon too)
yay yay yay!
