I’ve always hovered in the 9:40 to 10:00 min/mile pace range in the couple years before I had my son but I didn’t run very regularly. My 5k pr was 30:07 about 6 months before I got pregnant. I’ve been running a lot this year, including a 4 mile race, my first half marathon, and a 15k. My pace has been slower since having my son, around 10:30 to 11:00 min/mile.
Last night I headed out to a semi-local park for a women’s 5k put on by a local running club. I was hesitant, because it was 85, sunny and a hilly course, but decided to run anyway. My jaw fell open when the race marshal called out 9 minutes even as I ran past the first mile marker. That was the flat part, and I knew I would slow on the hills, but I kept my pace up, didn’t walk, and kept going. I crossed the finish line at 30:00 even which is a 9:39 min/mile pace!
I was so excited because I’ve been working hard to get back to my pre-pregnancy speed and fitness level. I’ve surpassed the fitness level and am running longer runs and more weekly mileage, but the speed has been a slower progression. I really feel accomplished and can’t wait for my next race!
