Babies can have water anytime. It does not matter if it is bottled or tap.
I'm no expert obviously, but our doc said we should only use limited (if any) water before 6 months. I think it's because it waters down the nutrients in the breastmilk. But our baby got constipated from starting solids, so the pedi approved a small amount of water daily. When I read up on it, some people said you need bottled water (purified because it's lower in flouride). Others said you're supposed to boil and cool tap water. I've just read a lot of conflicting info. Guess I'll be making my 12,678th call to the doc to clarify. Oh, they just love me there. lol.
Honestly it doesn't matter what type of water you use. It is even safe to use well water as long as you have a purifier. :)
@secondchances: I would think well water would be the *most* safe, cuz it's less likely to have added chemicals/hormones.
As long as you use a filter, any water should be fine. Bottled water is often just tap water that has been filtered at the bottling plant, so I wouldn't waste my money on it. As far as flouride goes, you'll need to check with your municipality whether they flouridate the water or not, and then check with your doctor if the small amount of water your baby will consume contains dangerous levels of flouride.
Fwiw, bottled water is not required to disclose flouridation on their labels, and since most bottled water is filtered tap water anyway, many bottles of water probably contain some (low levels of) flouride.
i just boiled some fresh water in the kettle and allowed it to cool

Does anyone know what kind of water is best for a 6-month-old? Our baby is exclusively breastfed and this is for straight drinking (not mixing with cereal, fornula, etc). The doctor suggested we give our baby a small amount each day because she had constipation issues, but does is matter what kind? Bottled? Purified? Spring? Nursery? Tap (Boiled and cooled)? Brita? I guess it has something to do with the flouride in water or something? I'm confused!
