well, i guess things weren't busy enough for us what with planning a wedding out of town. not out of town enough to be completely hands off, just out of town enough to make. me. crazy.
anyway -- we have an opportunity to buy the place we're renting and today we've decided to go for it!
OMG, that's AWESOME!!!! Congrats! Being a homeowner is definitely an experience of a lifetime...you learn to be handy really quickly! =) When the roof starts leaking, or you find creepy crawlies in places they have no business being...scream really loud in hopes your SO can hear you and rescue you, but then figure out how to fix it before calling the professionals because all of a sudden everything costs $$$$!
i know .. and our place is gonna need some ATTENTION :) it's actually a duplex though (1 level), so we are going to rent the other side for a while to save up more money, and then one day tear that wall down to have an awesome long wall of windows!
I'm so excited!!! I guess i will be a DIYer for life now hahahahaha
No advice, just commiseration :) On Tuesday we signed the contract to buy a condo here in NYC. Yesterday I got offered a new job, and the wedding's in a month!
Congratulations on your decision, I think there's nothing better than knowing that you have a place that's YOURS. And you can do whatever you want with it! Isn't it exciting?
That's great news! You don't even have to pack!! I am a little biased here, because I'm a Realtor, but I cannot say enough wonderful things about buying a home. One thing I might recommend, since you're used to renting and having a landlord, but depending on the age of the home, you might want to buy on your own or ask the seller for a home warranty. The first year is always tough (especially financially, even moreso when you're getting married!!), and a home warranty is just piece of mind. If your hot water heater goes, or it starts getting really warm out, and you find out your AC doesn't work, you can pay a deductible (50-100 bucks) and they will come and fix it. It will cover most large ticket items, and you can renew it year after year if you choose to do so. If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me (someone who doesn't have any financial interest in the matter, haha). Congrats!!
Wow.. that is good news. What a relief, you don't actually have to move and you get to own it. I know how busy buying your first home is, I'm in stress overload right now. My wedding is out of town (in another province) next month, we just bought our first home (moving at the end of May) and the new house is in a completely different city. Luckily I'm not changing jobs, I'm going to work from home in the new location, but my FI just graduated and is starting his new career one week after the wedding. I can't wait for July to come so I can just relax.
Isn't it funny how everything seems to happen at once? But it will be so nice to live in your "own" house after the wedding. Congrats!

things do seem to always happen at once :) it's funny that a year ago i was graduating (I went back to school for a 2nd degree) and now i have all of these adult life changes! one day at a time, right?
