For me, it was really helpful. I don't usually wear my hair up, so it was nice to see how it worked up, making sure it was comfortable, finding out how much abuse the style could take and how it fared at the end of a long day. It was also in the hair trial that I discovered my original plan for hair bling wasn't going to work, so I've got a few months to formulate plan B.
I've not done a makeup trial yet, but am looking forward to exploring the possiblities and testing out how that translates in real life and in photos (one of the bees did a post on that not too long ago).
You'll be fine with a week to go. Personally, I wouldn't want to go without one, but I'm sure there are people who have and came out just fine. :)

for my hair trial, i decided i hated how my face looked with my hair up. for my make-up trial, i thought i was slathered in make-up but it looked ok in the photos. a lot of bees have posted on make-up artists who make them look like drag queens.

It is VERY important because that is the day you and the makeup person figure out EXACTLY what you want. You do a trial run of what it would look like on the day-of.
You take photos, you see how long it wears, and if any tweaks need to be made to either make it last longer or photograph better. This may mean lightening or darkening the colors, using airbrush instead of traditional foundations; you find out if using a different product all together is needed.
Sometimes, what you may think as natural and fresh makeup for a wedding won't photograph at all so this is the time to experiment with it! It's very important.
I am not able to have a hair/make-up trial until the Tuesday before our wedding. For me it is very important to have a trial because I want to feel confident and beautiful when walking down the aisle. I'm going to take pictures with me to show the stylist the looks I'm considering as well as a picture of my dress. Will probably also take my veil and jewelry. I have very oily skin and want to make sure I won't have any problems with my make-up the day of.
I would not book someone without a trial first. It took me three tries to find a make-up artist I liked and I still have not found anyone to do my hair.
I am defnitely too much of an anxious person to go without a trial. I would have been a nervous wreck leading up to the wedding day.
I think if you have a good history with the person doing your hair though, it may not matter as much--you would feel more like you could trust what they were going to do. I really liked the girl I went to, but she had only cut my hair once before, so I wanted to be on the safe side. In the end, I loved what she did for the trial.
I'm glad I went for hair trial because now I am confident that I am going to love my hair and makeup! It made me feel so beautiful that day, that I wanted to run out and get married right then and there! I cant wait till saturday!!!!!!!!
I think it depends on how much you trust your stylist. I'm asian, and in Arizona, which is majority caucasian, I knew I might have problems. My hair trial turned out aweseome, but the make-up was so bad I changed make-up artists. I think doing it one week before is fine if you want to change your style, but NOT if you want to change your stylist.
You might be able to schedule your trial to coincide with another wedding-related event such as a shower, bachelorette, boudoir pictures, etc. You can get a little extra mileage and see how your makeup will wear over a full day:)
i want a simple up-do and fresh, natural-appearing makeup.
i won't have time to have a hair/makeup trial until about 1 week before the wedding. how do people feel about the importance of the trial run?
