7 Days! ONE WEEK! Until I get married and the biggest mess of all just happened- my birth certificate is MISSING! *freaks out* I never looked for it because its been in the exact same place for 9 years! How does it suddenly go missing NOW?! In other words- our wedding is a wedding FAIL because we won't be legally married! I thought the state had a 3 day before the wedding period between getting the lisence and getting married but it turns out its a 7 day period....today is THE last day to get it before the wedding! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I can't get a copy because my county of birth is 3.5 hour drive away one way and I should have left for work already! *PANIC*

Oh no! I am so sorry!

But, could you still have your wedding and count that as your "emotional" wedding day and get married by the JOP later?

Or could your mom go get your birth certificate for you?

Ugh, I'm sorry that happened, but don't panic. You'll still have your ceremony, and everything will go exactly the way it would with or without the license, right? I think that saying your vows in front of your family and friends is more meaningful than the formality of signing a marriage license, anyway. So your wedding anniversary date will still be your wedding date, as far as I'm concerned! Now you'll just have a funny story to tell people about your wedding!

Oh crap!  I'm so sorry!  Can your Mother get it for you?  Or can she only do that if you're a minor?  If she can, maybe you can meet her half way?  Or can you take the day off and do this?  I think this counts as an emergency so your office/boss should hopefully allow for the time off!  Omg, keep us posted.

Do you HAVE to have it? We can use an ID "such as a driver's license, military I.D., or a certified copy of a birth certificate."

Or is there a way to fax or something? Talk to the Marriage Clerk and your officiant ASAP. I've heard officiants say they can't even stand there unless a valid license is physically present. But, I'm sure each state is different...

There's gotta be a way! I think today needs to be a sick day!

wow - huge bummer - seriously its worth taking the day off work to get this squared away - or otherwise its not a huge deal though - lots of folks do it. im with KLP though - thank goodness for VA - $30 and a flash of ID and oath swear and we are golden.

Here is info ^ on getting a certified birth certificate in Milwaukee.  You can get it same day by going in person - you don't have to go within the county you were born - a certified birth certificate issued by the state will work as well.  Maybe you can get this over your lunch and then you and your FI can go apply for the marriage license this afternoon?

    good luck!!

I'm so sorry, but I agree, don't panic!    You actually could probably get your marriage license and birth certificate from the same place if your fiance wants to go with you. Then you could possibly even work on last minute details in the car as one of you drives.   At least it's a good story.    Also, I agree with @stillme, standing up in front of friends and family is much more meaningful than a peace of paper the state gives you.    If you get the license after, your wedding day will be no less meaningful.

@KLP2010: Yeah their requirements are crazy. We only needed Drivers Licenses and $38 (cash OR check) :)

Rabbit, I'm in Milwaukee and I had a total marriage license snafu, too!  We applied for it two weeks in advance, so no problem there.  I was going to pick it up on a Thursday during lunch, but then I was like "oh, I'll just go tomorrow..." and the courthouse was CLOSED.  Furlough day!!  We had to call the county clerk at home and beg him to come to the courthouse and give us our license.  It was crazy.

Even though you won't be legally married, it'll still be gorgeous and special.  Then you can just make it official afterwards!

We live out of state but are getting married in Waukesha County.  We weren't going to be in town early enough to allow for the waiting period and so they're allowing us to pay an extra fee and just get our license the day we go in to the office.  Perhaps if you call they will be able to work something out for you.

@huckleberry783:, @stillme:,@His Barista:, @jennifer_espos: While my dad still lives in my home town, he is 4-6 hours North of it on vacation with my brother (celebrating my brother's shiney new master's degree and bonding before my brother moves to Maine on the 6th with with girlfriend). They won't be back for several days and my brother's phone is off (I tried to call to see if my dad had a copy at home.) After a good 12 hours of utter panic, I slowly released the panic, took a ton of big breaths, and...let it go. Our priest will still marry us, he'll just have to sign the paperwork with us and two witnesses at the end of the month. If I had called in sick, they would have been unable to function at work as our office is tiny (4 people) and another co-worker called in sick yesterday. Our office can't even open with only 2 people! :O Plus, my FI found out he's lost his Social Security Card (another requirement) and its a whole 2 week wait to get one (despite going down to the SSC Office in person yesterday). :_( Total fail all around! I'm going to ask my dad to pick my birth certificate up when he gets home from his vacation and bring it with him to the wedding. Then, when FI's SS card gets here, we can go that day to pick up our marriage lisence...and then wait another whole week before we'll be allowed to sign it! *sigh*

@KLP2010: In the state of Wisconsin, it is Illegal to fax a Birth, death, or marriage lisence. So that is definately a no go. And yeah, the amount of crap the state of WI requires to get a marriage lisence is just redunkulous! Why isn't my WI Driver's lisence, and either my Birth certificate OR my SS card good enough?! In that case, we'd be golden!

@denverbirdlet: Ummm...AWESOME to know! If I read that right, I can get a birth certificate from anywhere in the state at any county court house?! :D My travel time from work to the court house is...a few blocks. Whooo! I'll have to try this Monday.

@camrie: i agree! They ARE crazy!

@Chillmer: Wow! Its awesome he came in just to give you your marriage lisence! Its good to know at least one government official isn't a jerk around here! :D

@kiddosc: Only out of staters can do this! :_( I called and asked on Friday because my co-worker mentioned this too. Apparently 20 years ago in state folks could go this route as well, but they stopped that for some reason. Boooo!

@HeyJude: See #16- my reply above yoru posting for further info. I do have my passport, but here in WI its useless to get a marriage certificate. You NEED a birth certificate, a social security card, a Driver's lisence/state ID, and $115.

Is it bad I'm relieved for you about your FI losing is social security number?! That way you're both equal in this situation ;) I'm glad to hear you're not freaking out any more. I think signing the license later is a totally fine option. No one is going to notice that you didn't sign it during the ceremony (we're actually signing ours before and skipping this part!).
