I took off work today to take care of changing my name.  I work standard 9-5 hours and it's hard to find time to go to the SSA.  Everything at the SSA went great so I headed over to the MVA.  I filled out the form for name change and went to the booth.  The lady asked when I had changed my name at the SSA and informed me that I have to wait 72 hours after the SSA application is submitted to change my name with the MVA.

Has anyone else encountered this?  I didn't see anything about it on the MVA website!  Ugh, what a pain!

Oh, BTW, I live in Maryland.

I'm in another state, of course. The SSA gave me a letter to take the DMV, but I actually went on a different day after I got the new SS card. I guess it's too late now, but I'd want to get someone else to say why that matters or how you were supposed to know that. Too bad you had to wait and then not get it done!

I got a receipt from the SSA and they said I had to wait 24 hours for the name change to become effective.  I wont get my new SSA card in the mail until 2 wks though.

I waited to go to the MVA until I got the card in case the letter from the SSA wasn't enough.  I am assuming that it takes the SSA 72 hours to update the computer system so the MVA can confirm you changed your name.  It's a pain, but at least the MVA has hours outside of regular business hours!

Yea, they said that the issue was with the database being updated.  I think I'll just wait for my new SS card to come in so that I don't run into any more problems!

I am glad that the MVA has better hours than the SSA!

When I went to Social Security, they also told me that I need to wait 24 hours before I could change my name with the state.  I think it's exactly like you said, the SSA database has to refresh or something with your new name in it so they have the record of it.

I wasn't told anything about having to wait.  I was able to take my marriage license to the DMV right away to change it.

Ugh!  I experienced this same frustration!!!  I took the first 2 business days after our honeymoon off so that I could deal with all the name change rigamarole.  I did social security first but was unable to do MVA that day or the next because in MD they said it takes 48 hours to change in the system.  So even though social security gives you a letter, you can't do it at MVA till it's been processed in the system.  This put a big damper on things because I wasn't able to change my name at the bank untill I had a photo id with new name.  Changing your name is so frustrating because everything is interconnected and the order in which you do things is so specific!

That stinks!  I didnt have to wait, mine was automatically updated in the system so it showed up when I went to the DMV.  Maybe it varies by state and/or county?

I will be filling this information away for next summer. Fortunately I am a teacher and I will have a month after the wedding before school starts again to take care of all of this nonsense.

I waited for my SS card and went to DMV only to be told I need my marraige lisence.  They don't need to see the ss card.  GRRRR.  So frustrating.
