Both! But most cake recipes I've come across use 8" recipes but I have 9" and just adjust baking time. :)
I would like a jelly roll pan but I'm not sure how often I would use it?
I would recommend at least a set of 9" pans. I use 10" but tend to make cakes to feed 10-15 people.
A jelly roll pan is like a traditional cookie sheet except that it has sides, some taller than others. Many people use them as cookie sheets, myself included, or for actual jelly rolls and breads.
1/2 sheet and full sheet just refer to the sizes... someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a full sheet is made for commercial use.
Consider going for a good quality aluminum when registering for bakingware, it really pays off, and there's not too much of a price difference.
I'm not entirely sure about the sheet pans, but I would get both sizes of the cake pans. I've had recipes for both sizes. I think I use the 9" more often though.

Would you suggest registering for 8" or 9" cake pans?
And, while I'm at it -what about the difference between jelly roll pan, 1/2 sheet pan or 1/4 sheet pan?
