The wedding is 8 weeks away, and my Mother still does not have a dress. I mention it at least once a week, and she always tells me that she is working on it. I’ve offered to go shopping for it with her, but she hates shopping, hates malls, and just plain doesn’t want to go. Today, she sent me a link to this dress, from J. Crew:
Asking if this would be ok. It’s a $50 cotton/spandex summer dress – I wear things like this to work nearly every day in the summer time! I love my mother dearly, and I recognize that she isn’t really a fancy/fussy dresser – but, does anyone out there have any suggestions about how to get her to pick an appropriate Mother of the Bride dress?

is she willing to spend a bit more money? Nordstroms has some really pretty dresses for MOB

@totheislnds: Thanks for the suggestions – some of those are gorgeous! It’s not really a money issue – she will spend the money. It’s more an issue of her just not being a very fancy person, and I know she feels like all the MOB dresses are ridiculous and overdone. I’ve suggested a trip to Nordstrom in the past, but, like I said, she won’t take me up on it. She is also tiny, yet insists on wearing large, shapeless silouhettes as a general rule. I just want her to be comfortable, and look gorgeous!

Buy one for her. If she hates shopping, she’ll thank you for it.

I’m glad I’m not alone here…I consider myself the furthest thing from a control freak but my wedding is 7 weeks away and my mom hasn’t expressed the slightest interest in a MOB dress. I guess my concerns stem from the fact that she has notoriously worn “blouses” (a t-shirt with some lace/beads/or sequin detail somewhere) leggings or casual cotton/polyester dresses to “dress up” for graduations, weddings, fancy restaurants, etc in the past. Every time I bring up the MOB dress subject she states that she intends to lose weight and wants to wait until closer to the wedding. I suppose I am secretly terrified that she’ll show up with one of her usual super casual outfits. My Future Mother-In-Law bought her dress months ago – I guess I expected my mother to be more excited about finding a dress too. The closer the wedding gets the more worried I am about my mother grabbing another t-shirt off the rack somewhere.

Heh. My mom just purchased her dress two days ago, and my wedding is on 10-08-11. It was my third shopping trip with her. She was a “no” machine for anything I would suggest; eventually this one from David’s Bridal, that I suggested, worked out:

That’s too bad! My mom was so excited she bought her dress before I’d even tried any on!
