Is this a "bitch fee"?

posted 1 month ago in Beehive

One make-up artist wants to charge $100 more for the mother of the bride than for the bride--whats up with this?

It sounds like a special promotion or something. Like a grooms tux is discounted if all the groomsmen pay. I don't think it has anything to do with a "bitch fee"

why dont you ask her?  is anyone else getting their makeup done?  ours was the same for everyone, including me and my mother.

I just got pricing from a make up artist: $200 for the bride, and $100 for anyone else. Uh, what? So similar idea, but switched. But I think if I'm paying anyone $100 or $200 to do my make up, they better make me look like a supermodel! Haha. Although, do you think maybe they are thinking a "mom" will take more make up and work than a bride? That's terrible to think about, but who knows. However, I agree, I would find out how much a bridesmaid, for example, would be.

LeahB, that's actually spot-on pricing for a makeup artist - especially in the NY metro area (I see you're getting married in White Plains). As crazy as it sounds, it also sounds crazy to spend upwards of $6000 for four hours of photography, but you get what you pay for. Quite honestly, a great makeup artist should make you feel like a supermodel! That's why trial runs are so important.

CarolineG, I figured it was the going rate for Westchester.. I just don't want to pay it

I would ask the makeup artist to justify the cost difference and then shop around and see what other makeup artists in the area are charging and find out why they are structuring their fees that way.  Then make your discision based on the info you've gathered.

$100 isn't too bad....usually its at least $175 around the Chicago area and that's for someone not that experienced. For someone with a ton of experience the going rate is sometimes $250 to $350.

I would ask for sure, but I imagine it has something to do with dealing with older skin. A young bride's skin is just easier to work with than her mom's.

lol @ 'bitch fee'. Hmm.. so I take it your Mother-in-Law isn't so nice? I don't know why there is a greater charge but if you find out let us know.
