Made my first batch of laborade and it tastes pretty good. I wanted to try it to make sure it was good before the real deal. I’m supposed to freeze it and take it with me when I go into labor.I’m likely going to have c section but just wanted to try it.
1/3 c lemon juice
1/3 c honey (I used agave nectar b/c that’s what we had at home)
1/2 t salt
1/4 t baking soda
2 crushed calcium tablets (hope Tums is ok!?)
1 Qt of water
Anyone use this to keep you going during tough times.

wow, I’ve never heard of that! at the hospital I just had apple juice and water…I labored most of the time at home and had juice and I think a popsicle? I had cereal that morning which didn’t stay down. 🙁 I’ve heard honey sticks are good and saw them at Sprouts the other day.

Ack! I don’t even know what this is or why? I guess that’s why we get 9 months…so we can figure all this stuff out!

I had 4 kids and never used that! Luckily, all my kids came fast and I had insanely short labours!

@BanditGirl: LUCKY! hehe I am hoping my next ones are shorter LOL

I will be using coconut water (bought a bunch of different flavors at Whole Foods last week to stock up!) to drink during labor, and I made Sugar Plums (a holiday mixture of honey, dried fruit, and toasted nuts) for labor snacks. We’re going in prepared!

I didn’t know I was in prodromal labor until after my water broke. I was just eating normal all day. When I was in active labor I wasn’t really thirsty or anything, but I was LOVING the ice! Crunchy softwater ice. It was so good.
What is the baking soda for? I only ask because one of the remedies for your kids ingesting a poison is to give them a tablespoon of baking soda, which makes them vomit. It seems like baking soda and labor wouldn’t go well together. :-S
Where did you get the recipe? I’ve never heard of “laborade” before but it sounds like a smart move to have something ready!

You can google LABORADE for different recipes. I forgot which site I got this one. There was a suggestion to put it in ice cube trays in the recipe. You know, after the ice melted, it didn’t taste very good afterall. I’m not so sure about that baking soda either. Maybe not. So thanks for the other suggestions for other hydration drinks. I think I’ll try the EmergenC and Gatorade next. Just concerned about the sugar and want to experiment, though I’ve been all about sugar my whole pregnancy.
